I went to coinfest today and looked at a lot of coins with my son. Its just really overwhelming. There are some raw coins I'm thinking about but I just wanted to get some feedback first to see if anyone is familiar with any of these dealers. First: Alan Groseclose of CoinCarolina He had dozens is not hundreds of gem Walking Liberty Halves all raw and one special coin at very good price which if I can scrape up the money I'm going to pull the trigger on. He'll be in Boston Next weekend. I don't want to give away the coin because I'm afraid someone will buy it. I can't see how someone won't buy it...it a wonderful wonderful coin. 2: Miller's Mint Ltd: out of Patchogue http://www.millersmint.com 3: John F Bachman from Delware - he had also some raw but nice coins in my possible budget 4: Steve Twitty PQDollars www.pqdollars.com --- Lots of Morgans and a few special Peace dollars worht mentioning 5: Wayne Herndon: from Virgina - huge display of hundreds of proofsets and intermediate coins. BTW - who is ICG 6: A WOMEN Lorraine L&T collectibles out of Kings Park, LI, NY 7: Arnold R Saslow - out of South Orange, NJ - Guy had some interesitng Yiddish and Hebrew currency and papers. Any comments on any of these folks? Ruben
I've bought from Saslow before, he has a pretty good shop. I hope to make a trek up there when I get back to NJ in December.
I would trust Wayne even though I've never met, nor bought anything from him. He has been around for years and everything I hear has been good. Speedy
Thank you very much for that insight. I happened have pickup a couple of things from him today. Nothing special but one is PF 67 1960 Franklin
Millers mint is a pack o' snobs.....right down the road from me. Wouldn't give me the time o' day. Bad experience.
Steve Twitty and Wayne Herndon are both class acts, and I had to pry a bunch of raw Lincolns from Millers here at the ANA, but the were ok, accurate and fair. I don't know the others
I bought a bunch of stuff from Herndon today, umm, yesterday and I was quite pleased, picked up several coins that I felt were quite undergraded. I also remember the name if memory serves me correctly from the 1980s.. last time I was collecting. They had a very nice Ty1 SL Quarter but I felt it a tad pricey.. just MHO though.
Could not agree more. Also, many cleaned coins. I haven't seen them in some time, but would still pass their table. "6: A WOMEN Lorraine L&T collectibles out of Kings Park, LI, NY " Lorraine is very nice, her son and my son both attended TCNJ (The College of New Jersey) at the same time. At least this explains why she wasn't at RT 110 (Melville) show on Sunday. Her stuff is good, fairly accurate grading, but her prices seem a bit high.
Leftovers from '76 Three thumbs down on Millers Mint made me curious enough to click the link. This item made me pause. Bicentennial Medal Sets MM says they were not produced for the Bicentennial but just happened to be made in 1976. MM doesn't claim they are US coinage but I assume the composition is a base metal. The wording could confuse a non-collecter. MM claims, "" limited edition, only 1,000 , unique, they'll go quickly, when they're gone, they're gone. "" At $24.95 USD each yet. This item is pure hucksterism. If they hype what seems to be a Cracker Jack novelty can the trusted? Not by me. Anyone have a good experience with MM. I'll keep an open mind just in case. Denis
If you can't say something nice, don't say nothin' at all. Hello Ruben, Coinfest really was overwhelming. Of all the dealers you mention, I only have experience with Miller's Mint. You might consider buying an ICG, ANACS, NGC or PCGS slabbed coin from Miller's Mint. I used to invest the time to look at MM raw coins but I haven't spent time doing that for a while. If you are concerned about the nice Walker, then just be honest & tell the dealer that you really want to get another opinion on the coin & you would like to know if he would offer a refund option. (If you look at it again & you really like it, then perhaps you really don't need anyone else's opinion). BTW, Nobody can guaranty the opinion that may come back from a TPG. Very best regards, collect89
Actually, I'm surprised that this kind of posting doesn't come up more often. I would have had a section for threads on dealers around the country with complaints, compliments and general assessments listed by dealer name in which the dealers themselves could come and address issues and such. Especially dealers in raw coins need to have their reputations widely available. Ruben
