Potential 1913 liberty nickel real or counterfeit?

I found the following on EBay:

As most of us know, this is a very rare and valuable coin, so why is it being sold on eBay for 99 cents and of course NO RESERVE!! Sounds good eh? well here's the catch- NGC says it's an illegible date and the horribly unreliable SGS says it's a genuine 1913 liberty nickel. So, any thoughts? Thank You all in advance.

They (SGS) filled out the label, but not even they slabbed the coin... when not even SGS will slab the coin as a 1913, what does that tell you? Even SGS only will say it's a potential 1913 (nice semantics... yes it is indeed a coin that may be 1913, but if it's not you can't claim that they said it definitely was).

In 95 years there's only been 5 1913 Liberty nickels confirmed to exist, and all 5 are currently accounted for. What's the likelihood that one escaped notice for 95 years? Especially with as much publicity there was over looking for them 95 years ago?

I'm guessing it's a G or AG 1912. Even 99 cents would be overpaying.

actually I think NGC got it right, it sure looks like 1911 to me.

 

anyone notice who sent it into NGC? city sound familiar???

I think I have several rolls of those "Potential 1913 5 cents". Wonder if he would sell me 50 SEGS holders to give these to my collector friends for Christmas?? They would die laughing

Isn't it known that only 5 1913 Liberty Head Nickels were made...and all of them are well known and accounted for. My understanding is it is a known fact that only 5 were made. If this was an 1894-S Barber Dime where some have been lost, I'd be a little more inclined to believe (and by little, I mean pretty much 0 chance).

 

yes. only 5 exist. They are very well accounted for. there is almost no chance this is authentic.

We have a bag of at least 1,000 cull V nickels at work. Clembo going digging tomorrow.

 

You took the words out of my mouth. Only 5 '13 Lib Nickels have ever been known. They all mysteriously "appeared" several years after 1913 after a former mint employee ran an ad in The Numismatist offering to buy '13 Lib Nickels. (The power of advertising is truly amazing.)

That set of 5 coins has been broken up but the whereabouts of all 5 coins is known. After all the publicity those 5 coins received and the prices they sold for the is NO chance whatsover that a 1913 Lib Nickel could have circulated enough to make the date illegible. None.

Absolutely.

This is the most ridiculous scam ever. This guy has over 144,000 sales on e-bay, with a 99.6% approval rating, and yet it's all rubbish.

 

It looks like an 11 to me. I'd bid on it for the stuff, but I wouldn't want to support that guy, or have him believe that he fooled someone.
