Incomplete Planchet.. They call it a clipped planchet but technically that is incorrect. Nice pick-up!
The reason is that the sheet of metal that is going through the blank puncher jammed for a moment. So the sheet didn't advance properly. The next blanks were cut too close to the previous area the blank before came from. That's why they are incomplete.. They were never clipped at any time. Got it?
The area directly across a incomplete planchet has a weird weakend strike appearance. That is considered and called The Blakesley Effect.
Curious, reverse quarter, cheek, jaw area, looks interesting? And over the R in DOLLAR after JLA initials
True, and I don't see it on the coins shown except for maybe the 1990 nickel. I'm not convinced that they are error coins.
Have a question about the surface condition of the planchets; are those stress lines, rays, flows (I don't know the appropriate term) that show to the west of Roosevelt's profile and over surface of the reverse of the 1967 dime ? Does this happen "during" the strike... Ready to learn...
"Incomplete planchet" is also a flawed term in that it's terribly non-specific. There are many ways for a planchet to be incomplete -- curved (concave) clips, elliptical (convex) clips, ragged clips, straight clips, pre-strike damage, etc. That's why I still use the term clip, with the appropriate modifier.
i do not think that all "clips" have the blakesly effect, i have even seen some in slabs that did not/? correct me if i am wrong, paddy??
Perhaps a better term for what I is see is "granular" or grainy, as before and in between the letters in DIME and above the oak leaves, also to the east of UNUM....is there s relationship between quality of the planchet material and how it responds under the pressure of the strike...am I heading in the wrong direction?
so..what you are proposing is that any error collector's should only buy "slabbed" coins, and pay 45.00 to 120.00 for clips, and broadstrikes for 120.00-200.00 because that is what slabbed errors are going for, i am quite sure that dealears with 15k + feedback are seling legite coins raw, and at better prices, just my opinion
