The Philadelphia overdate is easy to spot. Not so with the Denver variety. This is a 1942/1-D Mercury Dime. Take a peak at your Red Book and you can see the difference. It's hard to see in the photos but the 4 has the doubling on the lower stem after the cross to the left. There is a small bump below the straight line on the 2. It looks 95% like the photo in the Red Book. Now, all I need is the Philly variety. It's nice and clean but circulated. That's fine with me. This coin has character as it told me to buy it.
Wow i didn’t now there was a West Point Mercury dime !!! Lol just kidding.. but it look to have a die chip on the “w”. I love it...
You threw me for a moment as that is a common mistake. Lol Not sure if it's a die chip or not as it's too worn to tell, even in hand. The coin is nice looking.
To me they are still available and affordable. Just save some money and you can be the proud owner of one yourself. I'm amazed at the difference between the Philadelphia and Denver overdates. Denver did a much better job with the Die than Philadelphia.
Denver seems to do a better job than Philly even today. Maybe it’s the machinery? Unfortunately, I just don’t run across any examples here locally. My nearest LCS is over 50 miles away. The next is over 125.
That's the Philly variety. I'll send you my address so you can mail my slightly belated birthday gift to me. LOL
