I was looking on Ebay for this date. I found this one and wondered .....why would someone advertise a coin and take pictures of it while its laying in your bare hand? To me, this is a totally unacceptable way of showing a coin you have for sale. As much as I need this date for my set, I think I'll pass on it. There'll be more. Would you buy a coin advertised this way? http://cgi.ebay.com/1829-U-S-CAPPED-BUST-5-CENTS-HALF-DIME-Coin-VF-VF_W0QQitemZ270297362151QQcmdZViewItemQQptZCoins_US_Individual?hash=item270297362151&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2%7C65%3A1%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318
Your are obviously trying to make a point with the seller. If you do as you describe, the seller will be absolutely none the wiser.
I dont know what you're talking about. I've not attempted to make any point to the seller, I havent even contacted him in any way. Irrelevant comment.
I wouldn't have photographed it that way. But, like Doug said, for a circulated example I don't think it's going to hurt it. Unless he just finished a super-size McDonalds fries and didn't wash up. All in all, it's a very nice looking coin. Guy~
Im glad you are going to pass on the coin. I need it for my 7070 and one less bidder is good for a couple dollars less that i have to spend. I'm sure that coin has been in a lot worst places that the palm of the sellers hand in the last 180 years .... lol. I mean seriously.
any coin that is only AU or less could be pictured in a hand like that, but I wonder why anybody would do it unless he wasn't an avid collector like the rest of us fine people. Maybe U should E him and suggest that in the future he put the coin on the desk on a cloth and photo it, and to handle his coins only with gloves on. Gotta learn some time.
yes I'm sure it's counterfeit. Also I have seen many coins that are not counterfeit. I just (among other things) search for counterfeit coins on the boards so that I can alert those who seek to purchase it. Also Hobo, some people appreciate the help I give, maybe you don't care, but I certainly do. I do many different things here on the board. (just check what I've posted recently on my public profile, plenty other things then counterfeit detection eh?)
Well, if nothing else will prove it to you, here is a side by side comparison of the counterfeit and a genuine. the two images on top are of a genuine capped bust half dime of the same year. the bottom two are of this counterfeit. Notice the differences in details. If you didn't believe me then here's your proof. thank you.
Sorry to break it to you Isaiah, but this coin on eBay appears to be a genuine, problem free coin. If you aren't interested in it, please by all means do not bid. The coin obviously is not MS. If you don't understand how the details of a particular coin wear, it possibly could look like a counterfeit. After seeing the wear myself, it only confirms that the coin is genuine to me. If coin experts are telling you that the coin is genuine, perhaps you should listen. The images on top are of an uncirculated PCGS registry coin. That means that it is most likely the best known example of a 1829 BHD in existence. A very lucky person is the owner of that coin. For the rest of us who are not so lucky... Also, the coin has enough oxidation and is circulated enough to the point where it doesn't matter if you use gloves or not. Gloves are only necessary when you are working with uncirculated, or proof coins.
I agree. Average wear is the only thing I see different than the pics of the comparison coin. I've collected over 100 bust coins over the years, and I have to say it's a nice example of a circulated half dime. Guy~
I agree, the coin looks genuine to me. I think it's a very nice circulated example. As far as the way the coin is being held, it's not the best thing to do but for a coin in that condition...I don't have a problem with it.
