Never noticed the lite scratches until the pictures. Looks like it rubbed against something because those spots on the scroll and the wing tip are the only spots. You can look directly at it(with 16x glass) and see them. Would have bought it anyway since I like the overall strike and color of the coin. The funny thing is that they have not had any interesting shield nickels until today - in almost a year. Found these two today - like the cracks, nothing special. The one with r2 in the title has a very slight doubling of the annulet you can see it when you tilt it a little bit - not really worth noting. It also looks like it is either a grease filled die or a strike thru. Not sure at all. Once again all comments are always welcome.
Mark, Very Nice! The quarter really is nice for the grade, the scratches don't detract much at all. Jim
A long time ago, about 10 years or so, someone, a dealer, at a coin show told me to buy every Bust 1/4 that I could find if it is at all priced fairly, even with tiny problems. Many was he right, and I was only able to get a few of them. Those Busties are great, and very scarce.
Thanks - I like it even with the scratches. And Frank is right if the price is right - my local dealer actually recommends the smaller they get the more you should buy. Of course he did not say if the price is right.
Nice Mark, I believe I own but two Bust quarters myself. As for the shield nickels I like those as well. I see them frequently at work. Usually in a corroded state to some degree or another. Nice coins you got there.
Ruben - the right price is paying what it grades. Don't over pay - which I probably did on this one. Still I like the strike on it - does not seem as mushy as a lot of the other quarters I have seen. Thanks Clembo. I am not surprised - for the last year it seems like the local coin shop has only had low grade shield nickels, nothing nicer than normal. This week they had at least 4 1866's VF/VF and a couple of 1869's VF/XF range. More than usual this week.
