This 1944 Penny - I'm I correct if I say it should weigh 3.11 gr? This penny weigh's 2.8 gr, or sometimes 2.7 gr. A magnet will not pick it up. This coin has been in a box in my garage for many years and the scratch was there when I found it in the box. Could this be a Bronze Zinc composition?
Sorry, but it just looks like on old cent that suffered corrosion and environmental damage. The tolerance for copper US cents is +/- 0.13 grams. The slightly lower weight may be due to corrosion or resolution of your scale (0.1 grams). If it were struck on a slightly underweight planchet, it is minor and would not carry any premium, even if the coin wasn’t damaged
Yes, should be 95% copper and 5% zinc. These cents were minted from recycled shell casings from WWII.
If a magnet won't pick it up then it's not magnetic. It's has all kinds of problems and it's only worth face value.
As already stated @ddi, it is a heavily circulated old cent that shows wear and tear. PMD, post mint damage. NAV. No added value, but collecting is about keeping what you like. Keep looking and questioning to educate yourself. Good luck.
I know the coin is badly corroded, but why is the scratch not corroded? Could someone tell me the composition of this coin?
