With a new eagle design I was thinking of starting a series. With the expense of gold and getting into coins in about 25 years after the 1st year I found myself starting and stopping and feeling the weight of even beginning to get past years. With so much ground to make up getting a 1 oz for each year back to 1986 would be impossible. Starting with a new series has a beginning and an easier entry. I wanted to get advice and guidance. I enjoy looking at them so I would want to die with them so buying the cheapest isn't the answer. I would obviously want the best appreciation and the easiest to sell if my heirs needed to or wanted to sell. No right or wrong answer. Just what you do or would do. Proof vs burnish vs slabbed ms70? 1 oz vs fractional? P.S. If you collect ASE I would love to hear how you handle the same in Silver.
Look, at a minimum you have 1 ounce of gold in the coins. Proof or regular, slabbed or non-slabbed, they are EASY to sell. I've bought a few PF70 Ultra Cameos/DCAM which I enjoy looking at. And I have some slabbed regular 70's and 69's. And some regular coins loose. If you pay a premium for features like a PF or MS70.....DCAM or UCAM....it's going to probably reduce your ultimate profits even if gold heads higher. But you might not mind doing that on a few coins. Put it this way....if I fell into $200,000 tomorrow and I decided to buy all gold coins....I'd probably buy 10 slabbed with fancy designations....another 20-50 slabbed mostly for ease of sale and protecting the coin....and then the remainder in regular circulated.
Personally I wouldn't buy Proofs or burnished coins as that's too expensive and AGE's or ASE's are so well minted and look so good that graded pieces aren't necessary either. Plain raw coins is what I've always bought, well not always but that's all I buy now! Right now is not the best time to get into either one as the prices are on the high side due mainly to demand! With all the dollars the government has printed up everyone and their Mother wants gold and silver! When I first started collecting gold I started out small. The premium is higher than if you bought a bigger coin but you gotta feel comfortable before you go whole hog, that's how I look at it. What is your plan? I mean are you planning on buying every denomination or every year? Something to think about for sure! Many people won't buy 1/10th AGE's as the premium is high but it's a lot of money and my feeling has always been to buy small first just to get your feet wet. That way if you change your mind you're not out too much money!
I would like 1 ounce per year. I love the proof look but the idea of a bunch of mint boxes stacking up seeme annoying. I was thinking graded to make storage in say a NGC box easy. Should only need 2 or 3 until I need a box for myself. I would love it if the mint said they would change the eagle each year like say a Panda but that won't happen so with graded it might be fun to get a different slab design each year.
Yes, some people buy themselves an ounce every year, wish I would have started that idea but it just never happened that way for me! You mentioned a 1986 being impossible, yes extremely difficult for sure! It wouldn't be that hard at a coin show but I think it will be awhile with the Corona issue in the mix!
There are only 18 saints in a doable-date-set. (07,08,09,10,11,12,13,14,15,16,20,22,23,24,25,26,27 & 28) At MS63, they are priced just over melt.
If I were to collect the AGEs, I'd probably just get the proof 1 oz. coins in PR69 holders. The premium for the 70 grade, where it exists, doesn't make much sense to me. I agree that OGP takes up too much space. I have some proof ASEs this way, and I'd rather have them in slabs. I also have the bullion ASEs in a Dansco. Putting together a Dansco of AGEs would be pretty cool, but there's no such album.
