1965 & 1967 Carwash Quarters

Here's a few more of the quarters that I had gotten from the change machine at the carwash within the last year or two. I held onto them since they were in such great shape for their age. I got these two on the same day actually. So I'm thinking perhaps all these quarters that are in such great condition that I've been getting from the carwash lately are from the same individual. Perhaps the person decided to just dump their entire quarter collection at the carwash. It's the same carwash where I got those two proof quarters (Bicentennial & 1984). Pix aren't that great though. So much glare since they are so shinny. Breast feathers are visible on the Eagles, so it appears these quarters didn't spend too terribly much time in circulation.

Point of this thread is not to point out any such errors or whatnot with these quarters. But more so to demonstrate that there are lots of old quarters out in circulation these days. Nothing that special about them, except for maybe personal appeal.

Yes, looking through all of my change at the end of every day.

 

Some kid is stealing dads collection to wash his car for the girls.

 

In the early 70's I got a nice collection of small change from a local mom & pop. I figured some kid cashed in part of dads collection.

 

That would be sad. But the thought does cross my mind when I come across such coins in circulation.

 

Sad one. I was sitting in a bar in a small town in Nebraska back in the 60's. The man next to me was drinking beer and paying with some nice looking change. I finally got a glimpse of proof coins. Back then there was 91 cents in a proof set. The sets cost $2.10 from the mint. There was a coin shop about two blocks from the bar, I had just been there. If he were a collector and needed cash for some beer he would sell them and get at least $2 a set. The local police station was 2 blocks the other way. I walked to the cop shop and told them the story. They took it from there.

 

Oh man. I hope it wasn't a stolen collection. That sucks. What town in Nebraska?

Wow. Small world. Thanks for sharing. I've been to Hastings many times. My father was born and raised in Aurora. We have family in Grand Island, Burwell, Hastings (of course), Stromsburg, Milford, Lincoln, Weeping Water, and a few others as well.

 

I have a daughter in Greenwood. 3 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren in Lincoln and Crete. I was stationed 4 years at the Navy Ammo Plant in Hastings. 2 children born in Hastings. I got a parking ticket in Grand Island. It was a warning with 2 tickets to the local theater.

 

I never even knew they had a Naval Ordnance/Ammo plant in Hastings. I have a cousin who lives in Crete, though I've never been there before myself.

 

The US Navy had an Ammunition Plant in Hastings. It was very convenient to all three coasts for WW 2. It completely closed in the 60's. I was in the US Air Force. We established 2 stations there. One was a Radar Bomb Scoring (RBS) and the other was an Air Defense Radar Station that had Radar and Radio - Ground to Air Transmit and Receive (GATR). The RBS station scored practice runs by B-52's out of Offutt AFB in Omaha. I was assigned to the GATR site.

 

That explains why I didn't know about it. It was before my time.

When I drive out to visit my father in Burwell and other relatives in the area, I've come across quite a few Vietnam memorials along the way. My brother was in the Air Force and I was in the Navy.

 

Youngster! I'm a Vietnam era vet.

Wow, it's not dawned on me up until right now reading the last few posts on this thread. These quarters date back all the way to the Vietnam and Hippy era. These coins are also real survivors.
