I have tried. I cant stand hunting dimes. I have good luck with all other coins but dimes always disappoint me from rolls. The only dimes I find worth keeping seem to come to me in pocket change... which I know comes from a roll as well. Anyone like searching dimes or finding good finds in them?
I have had some pretty good luck with dime boxes in the past, but I've had my fair share of dry boxes as well. I have not hunted dimes in a while though, so it could be different now. Pennies are my favorite denomination to hunt through, plenty of varieties to look for.
I did about 6 months where I would search 4 boxes of dimes a week. I also searched a few bags off a coin counter. They are just too small. I averaged about 1 silver per $250. Not worth it.
Meow does not like nickels or dimes, as there seems not to have much flavor in them. Meow likes to hunt quarters and pennies far more. Not sure about halves as Meow cannot get halves where Meow lives.
Nickels have a pretty good flavor IMO. Plenty of foreign, war, and buffalo nickels. At least on my end. I gave up on nickels after searching $50k and never finding a 39d or 50d for my circulated set.
Meow - surprised to hear that you haven't found nickels to be worth your while. I have to agree with Furry; nickels provide decent finds. They are my favorite to search, albeit it's been a long while since I searched anything beyond my change.
Furry - that almost seems impossible. You've paid your dues for sure...and should have been rewarded. Interesting though.
It is a shock. I got my first 50D as a kid back in the early 80s. I didn't know it then, but I remember thinking, "Wow...this nickel is in great shape!" It sat for another 30 years under my bed collecting dust. In the end, it was a liberated MS coin that I happened upon. But I've found 2 more since. One well circulated specimen and another MS coin that unfortunately, picked up some radial scratches from a counter/rolling machine (reverse only). As for the 39D...only 2 I think and both well circulated. But I'm well behind your $50K, pro-level CRH!! I'm guessing maybe $6K over the years.
I agree on the nickels. I tend to find a decent amount of buffalo's, silver, and early ones. There are also a good amount of dates that could have cherrypicker guide varieties in nickel boxes. However, I hunt pennies and quarters primarily as well.
Oh, forgot to mention...HOLY CRAP!?!? 50K!?!? Life goal added to my list! I am still around $500 or so. Sorry you didn't find those. That sucks but I would think you would eventually hit one of each in 25000 rolls.
Well, Meow did find a silver war nickel in the second roll of nickels Meow ever hunted. But only one more after that. And 2 Buffs. Meow got bored with them and sticks to the quarters and pennies now.
I used to hunt for silver and would sometimes get 1 -2 silver dimes out of a 250 box. It was fun at first then seemed so much work just to find 1 or 2. Who knows I might start looking again.
Haha. Not sure you’ve been around that long to see the volume I used to search. I have slowed down considerably.
I find that dimes have very few interesting coins for the volume, but nickels are fun. I agree with CaptMac, pennies are the most fun. I got 10 rolls of nickels on Tuesday and found 2 nice looking buffalos and a war. I am going back to that teller this week to see if she still has any in those particular wrappers, might be rolled by someone with a stash being liquidated.
i find a lot of MAD (mis-aligned dies) dimes, and struck through and a few silver from going through about 20 rolls so far..i had no luck with nickels, cept for a few 50's ones, and pennies i do better with unc and errors dimes as well, have pulled maybe 60 unc, from ms-60 to 68 from rolls
Out of my 7 boxs of dimes ive hunted the only things ive found was a 1973 proof and 30 or so 2009s. I just stopped doing dimes.
