Featured The Old North Church

This church was founded in 1722. It was built in 1723 and is known as The Old North Church. It is Boston's oldest surviving church and it's the most visited historical site in Boston. It is an Episcopal Church and still holds services.

On the evening of April 18, 1775, when the church sexton, Robert Newman, and Vestryman Capt. John Pulling, Jr. climbed the steeple and held high two lanterns as a signal for Paul Revere that the British were marching to Lexington and Concord by sea across the Charles River and not by land. This fateful event ignited the American Revolution.

In 1775, on the eve of Revolution, the majority of the congregation were loyal to the British King and many held official positions in the royal government, including the Governor of Massachusetts, making Robert Newman’s loyalty to the Patriot cause even more extraordinary. The King gave the Old North Church its silver that was used at services and a bible.

Each year over 150,000 visitors come to this site to experience the unique and stirring monument of liberty.

The church’s first organ was installed at Old North in 1736. In 1759, the church commissioned Thomas Johnson to install a new organ. The instrument has been rebuilt several times, but a number of components from the Johnson era remain.

In order to restore the church numerous things have been done over the years. One of them was to refurbish the original organ. This is a token created to help finance one of the repairs to the organ. It is made from metal from the organ at this church.

That is an awesome token. I have stood in Old North Church and I hope to again someday. It's a very important and fascinating place.

 

That's wonderful! They do give tours but it's closed due to the virus. One day I hope to get there along with a few other places in the New England states. So much history for me to discover.

 

I would love to spend a few days in Boston. Had one day there years ago and hated to leave.
