Ever since visiting Rome last summer I developed an interest in the history of the Roman Empire. I was already collecting coins but not from that time period.

Well, I finally got my first few Roman coins a few days ago from Vcoins and just wanted to share them. Appreciate any input you might have on them as I am still very much an ancient noob =)

I really just chose them because they were the most interesting ones to me within budget (less than $50/coin) and silver.

Quite a nice set. Good price too if all are cheaper than 50 bucks. I collect Greek coins and they are way more expensive than Roman ones in general. You cannot find decent examples for that amount.

Very nice representative examples. The Geta and Septimius Severus are especially nice for under $50.

I particularly like the Geta for the young portrait. I always find it interesting when a new collector also adds a note as to what it was about the coin that made it appealing compared to others not purchased.

Your Geta /Spes Publica is correctly identified as Rome mint. I do not have that one. Below is a Spei Perpetuae coin from the branch mint in Syria. These are not marked with a city mark but distinguished by style.

Nice smattering of coins to start out collecting Ancients! Nice job, @Myntmannen ... keep perusing CT Ancients, and hopefully you will see more ideas to expand your collection.

Although I have several Roman Imperial coins, I enjoy the Roman Republic. I have a few from 137 BCE like yours:

@svessien Nice coin mate! I do collect Swedish coins (not the other neighboring Scandinavian countries).

@dougsmit Thank you! I was a little torn if I should have bought one $200 coin vs four $50 coins but I figured it would be a little bit more fun to get the collection going with a few more coins. I know some folks on here really preach the idea of buying fewer coins but at higher quality. While I do agree with that, one could really take that to the extreme and argue to just buy 1 coin for 1K then rather than five $200 coins over a year or whatever ones budget allows.

@Alegandron Thank you! I like yours as well! How do we know these are from 137BC?

References from Sear, and Crawford, as well as various online references. These are based on hoard evidence and dating, etc. I leave that ALL to the experts. You can always google, go online to various sites to get a lot of attribution and best dating information about coins.

Welcome. You've bought some very nice first coins! Hopefully you will be inspired by all the coins shown by members and further your collection. Do you have a particular interest in a certain area/era?

Do whatever you want, that's my advice. It's your hobby :) Just be sure to buy from trustworthy dealers/auctioneers.

I was wondering if that's what I was seeing there. The placement of it perfectly abutting the outline of the nose is pretty cool looking.

@Alegandron Haha... Thanks for the links. I will check them out.

@Ryro Okay, so that's what that is! It almost looks like it was part of the helmet's design.

@Limes Thank you, no not really, at this point maybe just get one of each emperor. I do like the designs of the Republic a lot though...
