2003 Cents were struck on Copper Plated Zinc Planchets. Any kind of damage to the plating will affect the zinc. That is zinc rot.

Not a mint error of any kind.

First, welcome to the neighborhood, Michelle!

I realize that you're new to these forums, and based on the coin that you posted, it's a pretty safe guess that you're new to numismatics. Looking for errors requires a lot more knowledge and understanding of the die-making and minting processes than you think. You can't just start looking through pocket change and expect to know what it is that you see. Until you gain that knowledge, every odd-ball coin that you find will look like an error to you. ~ Chris

Hang around. Read threads. Ask questions. You will learn a lot here if you come with an open mind.
