I received this '71-S proof in the mail today, and the R in LIBERTY is missing its leg. Apparently, the die that was used to strike this coin was HEAVILY polished in this area. Also, there are 4 unusual "artifacts" on the reverse. I've included red arrows to point to them. I'm thinking these resulted from die gouges? They appear to be raised metal, and they are not nicks in the plastic holder (original mint holder). The plastic is completely smooth and uniform right over these areas. Thoughts on this strange piece?

Very interesting Ike... not sure I've ever seen one like this before.

I agree with you. My limited knowledge says die chips. Shouldn't be on a proof i guess

I shared this over on their forum as well. It just takes them a LONG time to respond. LOL. I bought this because of the R, but I had no idea there were due gouges on the reverse. You couldn’t tell from the seller’s photos. It’s an added bonus.

Yeah, it’s bizarre to see this sort of thing on a proof.

Does Ike have the sunken in look that they talk about as an indicator of the weak hubbing?

If my feeble memory is working today I believe you will find some answers to your questions in the book
“THE AUTHORITATIVE REFERENCE ON EISENHOWER DOLLARS“. seems like I read at least about the missing leg of the R in one of the books Chapters. Will do some research in my copy as soon as I can.

Check this out, guys. I completely forgot about this article on the Ike Group’s site. This Ike is a match to the final stage PPL (partial peg leg). However, the reverse gouges are a different matter altogether. I’m just puzzled about how this happened to a proof die.

Its a love hate thing. Either happy or not. I'm on the side of look it up on ebay and maybe sell it for a PF69

Missing leg on R, heavily polished, or grease filled? If heavily polished you should see signs of it on Ike's head, right?

In the article that both ike skywalker and I linked to. The weakness in the peg leg was done in the hubbing process and haplend to quite a few working dies.

@Pickin and Grinin - I’m so sorry I didn’t catch that link in your earlier post. I just assumed it was a link to the main Ike Group page. Thank you for posting it!

In looking at the “BER” of LIBERTY I Noticed it appears that at the bottom side of each of the 3 letters, there appears to be a degradation that seems progressive starting with the B, ending with the missing PPL PEG LEG . OF the R. Being relatively new to the intricacies of how things like this happen, if someone more learned than I can shed some light. Please do!
    Have a blessed weekend.
