Does anyone have any info on how many war nickels/dates/MM's were issued with a W? I think I'd like to put together a war nickel "W" set.
I'm not aware of any info released on how many coins received the designation. The "W" designation lasted around 2.5 years from 1999-2002. A war nickel set might be possible, but it will be challenging. https://www.ngccoin.com/news/article/73/
I think the war nickels have the mint marks above the dome, but no w, there is a new 2020 with the W mint mark, it comes from the Mint only with the 2020 Proof sets and I think the UNC sets also, u can look it up at the US Mint for the sets that include the special edition. edit, I thought you were talking about the 35% war nickels from 1942 to 1945, my bad!!
"W" and "T" were short lived designations given by NGC for White (untoned) and Toned coins. As NGC wrote: "The reason for ending its use is simply that the marketplace doesn’t see a great need for this designation."
I'd love to put together a T set but those Appalachian Horde coins can get stupid pricey for a nickel.
I fell into one W designation when I put together my war nickel set. I don’t think they’re that common.
The irony is that it really does, just not at the time the coins are slabbed. If you see a coin designated white that was graded 5 years ago and it's no longer white, that's because it turned. If you don't have that bit of information, you would never know that about the coin. The designation serves an entirely different purpose from what was intended.
No, the 5FS & 6FS designations weren't created until 2003, however there is no reason why you couldn't have a T or W coin combined with the FS designation which was used for 6FS step coins before they recognized 5 full steps. As to the OP's question, the W designation is tougher to find than the T designation on war nickels. I have only ever owned two of them (shown below). As for the war nickels and the T designation, you are correct, the Appalachian hoard makes up most of the war nickels with the T and they are very expensive. I paid over $1K for this one. I won't say it is impossible to assemble a war nickel set all with W designations, but it will be exceedingly difficult and take a very long time.
