Ottumwa Coin Show I was at the Ottumwa, Iowa Coin Show on Sat., Oct. 11. Overall, I was sort of disappointed. This was the Iowa State show, and there were less tables than previous years. The attendance was much lower than anticipated. Maybe it was the location, since Ottumwa is pretty isolated, but I also think the drop in the Dow, 401K, etc., didn't help attendence.
One thing about the lower attendance was that it was easier to get in and look at coins. You didn't have to wait in line to look at a dealers coins.
I'm not surprised by this at all. I think you hit the nail on the head. It is pretty isolated and the economic climate may just be keeping people home. If attendance is lower, that's good for you, the buyer. You know it won't always be like that so hopefully somebody got some good deals! What about you viper? No details?
Yeah...How about a report? With this economy, it's going to be interesting to read show reports from our collectors and members, not just the big nationals.
I a a little late with posting about the show, I had to work yesterday and didn't get a chance to post. I did manage to pick up three Mogans I needed for my set. I got a 1878 8tf that I needed, I also picked up an 1886-S and a 1901 from Philly. The coins are circulated, but most of the Morgans I have left are starting to get pretty steep in higher grades. My son bought an AU 1900 Morgan and some sleaves for his note collection. I bought him a pocket knife he wanted, It has a image of a hundred dollar bill on it, I couldn't resist. This was the first INA show I had been to, but I thought there were plenty of dealers. If there had been many more I don't know where they would squeased in. The crowd wasn't huge, but it looked like the dealers with reasonable prices were selling coins. There was a decent selection of coins to choos from unless you were looking for three cent nickels. I always get the same responce when I ask. They say, oh I left most of those at home, but I have some worn out common dates here.:goof: One highlight for me was I finally had a chance to meet a Cointalk member in person. I met Onehawk33 and as it turns out we attended the U of I at the same time and might have crossed paths in the dorm and never knew it. We had a nice chat and he gave my son a AU 37-d Buff which my son and I thought was very cool. I wish we would have had more time to visit, but it was still great to put a face to the name and share a few stories. I'll post some pics below. (Bad pics, I was in a hurry.)
Thanks for the update. Good looking coins. Looks like you enjoyed the show. There's another one coming up in Dubuque, IA at the greyhound park Oct. 19th only, from 9-4. Supposed to be 40 dealer tables. I'm surprised they're only doing this for one day but maybe they don't expect a big turn out either? I'll be there in the morning. Still have to work viper? Didn't know how far this one is for you but it is a Sunday and pretty close to me. I might bring the camera along just for the heck of it. Anybody else near by that can make it?
I got to the show around 11:30 (started at 9). One dealer had an AU 1893 O barber dime on hold for me, so I went straight there. I had some coins to trade and wanted to look at some fresh inventory he recently purchased. He had two 22" x 34" cases set out, which were 1/3 full and a couple of smaller cases half full. He had sold thru all those coins in 2 1/2 hours. While we were dickering (25-30 minutes or so), 3 other customers asked him about what gold he had. His comment was "that's all that's left." Business was brisk for him. I only had a couple hours to kick around, so I limited my perusing to MS buff's and specific date/grade barber dimes. From my conversations with other dealers, traffic was down but those attending were BUYING. In our part of the world we see the same dealers at many of the shows, and for the coins I was interested in, the inventory hadn't changed much since April. I bought a 1934 MS 64 buff, a 1908 S IHC XF45 flecks of luster all over, uncleaned, beautiful coin, and the aforementioned dime. I had a very nice conversation with Viper and his son. We both were a bit pressed for time, but I enjoyed meeting them very much.
I found some nice deals also. I brought a Franklin Half and a commem. I just thought it would be a bigger show. The dealers were for the most part friendly. The facility was nice structually, but smelled like they had a livestock show recently (yes, we are talking about deepest Iowa). But because of the remote location for most Iowan, I wonder if the INA will have their show there in the near future.
Coin show in Des Moines on Nov. 8 There's a coi show in Des Moines this weekend. Is anyone attending?
Well, have fun at the Penn State Game. As a fan and alum of USC, I hope the Hawkwyes pull an upset. Fight on!
Des Moines Coin show Well, I'll be there saturday. i think it will be a better show than the one in Ottumwa. fight on!
The coin show seemed busier than the Ottumwa show, but it may have been because it was in a smaller room. I did manage to pic up a couple coins. I picked up a 1901-S Morgan. Nothing special, all the wing feathers still there, probably VF +, but I needed it for my set. I also picked up a Greek coin from 1926, I liked the obverse and it was only fifty cents. I had to spend some of my circulate star notes to get the coins but, oh well, I'll find some more.
