Yes, if you want to authenticate a Rembrandt. However, most coins being slabbed today aren't in that category. But, as long as people want the convenience and have the money to spend, to each his/her own.
I don't like correcting you but in this case I have to. The song "Tutti Frutti" was originally recorded by Little Richard who also co-wrote the song. He recently passed away so "Give credit where credit is due". (Unk). Other than that, thank you for your sharing all the excellent info you give.
my opinion is that there are way to many grades then the labels then the first strikes, with every thing else . to drive up prices try selling some of these back .its all about the profit but some collectors and dealers are to blame they pay high prices and the dealer sells for profits as much as possible I collect coins I get what I want, have a price I am will to pay don't care about the slabs and try to get a decent looking coin
You are correct. When I wrote that, I knew it was Little Richard but somehow my brain told my fingers to type "James Brown". Doh!
A lot of collectors got hooked on the first strike stuff. Once hooked, many wanted to collect matching holders. I'm not picky about the slab either. That can be fixed if needed at the point of selling the coin. The coin is really all that matters.
Yes, I have seen these posts from crazy collectors who get bent out of shape when PCGS changes the color or style of their label. They refuse to buy coins with different labels or rush back to their coins re-holdered. There are others who are nuts over these doily holder things. I’ve had a couple of those, and it seemed like to me that the holder felt lose and kind of flimsy. I could not wait to get rid of them when I was a dealer. You know what they say about fools and their money. I buy the coin, not the label.
Here is a link. Would you pay a premium price because of the label? I won't. https://www.pcgs.com/holders/Gen2.0
I get it. Thanks. And no, I wouldn't pay extra just in order to have a matching set of holders. OTOH, I have a friend who has made a collection out of the history of PCGS holders and related exonumia. Really quite an impressive collection of stuff from the earliest holders to the latest. He will actually buy a coin just to have the holder.
Has anyone ever added up the number of different PCGS holders/labels? Maybe we should have a contest to see who can guess the number.
That's another sort of collection. OTOH if you had a 60 piece set of Indian cents would go nuts trying to get them all with some color slab label?
The only real reason to have the same label is if you are selling a high end registry set worthy of a pedigree. In that rare case, I would want them all to be graded at the same time. Otherwise, I don't care what the holder or the label looks like.
Yes. @Conder101 even wrote a book on the subject. The book was quite a few years ago, though, and I'm not sure how often he updates his files.
It would be interesting to see if the annual rate of new labels has increased since he wrote his book.
His book came out in 2006, I think. This was before the proliferation of all the First Day and Early Release and hundreds of special labels. I'll bet if he were to update the book now, it would have to be a 4 volume set!
When the book sold out Conder101 was kind enough to give me a copy on CD. Forgot what year that was but I still use it.
The majority of the labels are from bulk submitters and they have the rights to those labels. I don't really consider those proprietary labels to be a new TPG label. There's only a handful of new ones each year that everyone can get.
