How can this coin be considered RB , looks Brown to me , what is the criteria for RB ? http://www.steveestes.com/cgi-bin/newsite/C31056.html rzage
Either the pictures are bad or it is brown. It is hard to tell with the proofs - but from looking at heritage they must use something different for proofs. Several of the ones they call RB I would call brown and cleaned - some are just ugly in my opinion.
Red-Brown A copper coin that has from 5 to 95 percent of its original mint color remaining (RB). There do appear to be a few spots of copper showing. 5% ? Hard to tell. I don't know of a simple way to actually measure it.
Agree, brown in my world. but on Indiancents.com it says " BN: BROWN. No trace of RED. RB: RED & BROWN. Varies from a small trace of RED to a small trace of BROWN. A percentage of RED may accompany the designation." so using that definition they seem OK for the Indian cent world. Although for this cent they should have a GB for green/brown. More green than red Jim
Agreed. As pictured, it's brown. By that definition, anything with the slightest trace of red - 0.001% RD - is RB. And that ain't right. Like so many things in coinage, definition is one thing and practice another. I suppose the 5% - 95% band for RB is as good as anything, but as always buy what you like. We've seen some very nice, colorful IHCs on here which were TPG designated BN.
I was thinking that maybe it had more red when they slabbed it , then it turned brown in the slab ,maybe why they only cover coppers in their gurentee for so many years . rzage
Looking at it from the pictures , I'm hard pressed to find 1% red unless it's that spot on the obverse over the A of States . rzage
Red ? There isn't any. And while we're in the bizness of grading coins for ourselves and ignoring designations on slabs, let's ignore designations on websites too. I looked at a lot of those coins, and every one of them was rated "Eye Appeal" 8, 9, or 10. Many were mediocre. Some were called 9 or 10 that I would have called 5 or 6. I thought 10 was perfect !?
Anything to sell a coin , his pictures aren't the best either , I bought a MS-64 Barber quarter , a nice coin but in his pics. he really lightened it up , in hand it was about 2 shades darker , I guess to him beauty is in the heart of his wallet . rzage:eat:
Well everyone has their own eye appeal factor - while I agree with you all on the franklin, I won't speak for others. I looked at a few other coins - makes me wonder about the pictures along with the sellers eye appeal factors.
In all fairness to the seller, proof IHC's are next to impossible to photograph. A direct view of the coin will usually appear to be brown whereas when the coin is tilted under a light source, beautiful irridescent colors can explode off the coin. I see underlying hints of emerald green, magenta, yellow, violet, and blue. My guess is that this coin is extremely attractive to those that appreciate toned coins. However, I don't like that the seller lists the grade as MS64 for a proof coin. What I do like is the price. He is selling the coin at wholesale ($280). Look at this way, even if the coin doesn't deserve the RB designation and should actually be BN, he is still only listing it at retail for a PF64 BN, no premium for a coin he gives a 10 on eye appeal. That being said, if that Franklin is his idea of a 10 for eye appeal, he probably needs glasses.
If that's a proof coin then why does he grade it MS 64. Shouldn't it be PF64? Either way that coin is Brown. (from the photos). His Eye Appeal scale is way off. Bruce
I assume that he made a mistake in his listing, but I can tell you that mint state IHC's with that kind of toning are extraordinarily rare and bring huge premiums (at the present time--LOL Doug). The more you guys beat this coin up, the more I want to buy it so that I can provide you with a quality image. I think it probably has great eye appeal and you really can't go wrong with that price.
I was thinking of buying it too , because of what you said is correct , I have a Proof IC , thats RB , At certain angles it looks mostly brown , at others it has a lot of great colors , But I'm gonna pass because I spent my coin money for the next couple months , would love to see a decent picture of it , so if you want it go for it , he will return your money if you don't like it . And I wasn't trying to beat up the coin just the designation as RB , I think it's a beautiful coin . And at a very good price . IMO rzage:hatch::hammer:
Go for it..if you like it then buy it. That is always one of my mottos - if you like the coin and the price then buy it. I will tell you good deal and everything...., but that does not mean that I would like the coin for my collection. I hold nothing against people that like the wild toning that proof IHC's contain, but not me. Most of it to me looks like AT and not natural to me. So I will pass.
My problem is that I am not a collector of proof IHC's, I am a type collector and as you have seen, I already have a proof IHC. BTW, this coin also looks brown at certain angles.
