I initially was at 45, looking at the sharpness of the reverse (eagle's feathers, etc). But looking at the obverse, I amend my guess downwards to XF40. 35? Maybe, on a bad day. But it looks 40 to me.
After much more study during the past few days, analyzing the points I listed in my previous post and adding 'marks on the obverse & reverse' to my criteria, I searched many items graded by PCGS and NGC. My analysis included grades from VF-35 to AU-55. I have revised my grade, after spitting out many crow feathers, from my original post of AU-53 to XF-45+. I expect the TPG grade to be conservative at XF-45.
Thanks Robert! I really hope you are correct and it comes back at xf 45. I am waiting to piggyback on a submission with a dealer friend of mine so it’ll be a while. I’ll definitely post the results when they arrive.
Photograde is an excellent tool, however in this case you’d need to know about the strike quality and wear pattern for a specific sub-type, year and/or Overton variety. 1824 (OP coin) = sub-design 4 1828 (photograde coin) = sub-design 6 I’d rather compare this coin with pictures of other 1824/1 O-101s on eBay, GC, etc.
Make sure you list it with the proper value in the unlikely event it is damaged by the TPG. There was a recent article a few days ago about this issue. You should check it out. I wish you good luck.
