Jazz Coins Joe has a thread going on the US forum about the '76 Bicentennial silver set and it got me to thinkin'....any of you folks out there buy the "Americas First Medals" series? As I recall they were made out of pewter and were replicas of the first medals issued to generals for outstanding service during the American Revolution.

Thought I'd include one of my favorites "Light Horse" Harry Lee.

I have one for George Washington. I've tried to sell it a couple of times for a very nominal amount and it seems there is no resale value for it.

Quite true Cloudsweeper. You can pick them up today for what I paid for them back then, even less, but that's not why I bought them. I loved the designs and, oh yes, the history on each one of those medals. I could care a lick what they're worth.

Yes. It's the reproduction from the 70s. I don't know how many were issued but there don't seem to be many medal collectors out there.

Still they are cool , so a set wouldn't be exspensive , how many are there , and about how much they cost .

I only paid $5 for mine. It was an impulse buy. I don't know if there are any rarities that cost more or how many in total were made. Maybe the US Mint website has information.

I bought the entire set about 3 months ago, which included the mint album and the booklet. Paid a whole $25, which is a bargain to me. All are in pristine condition. The artwork alone was worth it. The only medal I'm missing is the Libertas Americana which is not part of the set and is really hard to find. I'd really love to have one of those too. Here's pics of a couple I have, haven't taken pics of all of them:

Here's a discussion on the series from the ebay coin & paper money discussion board, it discusses the series in depth:

When this series was first advertised by the US Mint it was supposed to culminate with the Libertas medal. Unfortunately that never happened. You certainly got a bargain Becky, I paid much more ordering these medals from the mint.

I too have the whole set. My local coin dealer had it for sale. Came with the slipcase, book, medals, everything for only $20. Just reading the book it came with was worth that. I don't collect many medals, but this set is one of my fav's.
