The New Hampshire copper is reputed, by some, to have never entered into circulation. It may, in fact, exist only as a pattern.
There are, however, a great many modern copys around. These, of course, have little or no numismatic value.
The chances of you having an original piece are astronomical.
However, the ANA does offer a certification service, if you are interested.

The ANA closed up their certification service over a year ago I believe. I'm afraid the grading companies or an independent expert are all we have left now.

Well as far as mintage goes, there are no numbers available. William Moulton was employed to make a limited number of coins in pure copper. Although cast patterns were prepared, it is believed that they were not approved.

If you can get detailed photos, send a copy to

This group specializes in early American coinage. Copper coins to be specific.

    Good luck.

    ND,

Could you tell us what the OP has?
Nothing confidential of course, just an identification.

    Oh yes sir.

Not that it was a secret, I was just trying to avoid the nasty emails about self promotion again.

It is a Massachusetts copper. Now comes the fun part. There isn't a way to confirm authenticity without personally handling the coin, but it has all the charactaristics of the One penny lawful money. It would have had a value of 1/12 shilling, or 1/72 of a Spanish Dollar.

Since the coin was found buried, it has possibilities.

Not many examples have ever come to market, although a few in the early copper field believe they exist. I have put the current owner in contact with some very trusted names in numismatics for authentication.

If you have a copy of the Red Book, a coin with the same obverse and reverse appears on page 38. While the coin represented in the Red Book is unique, it is of the same die design used for the coin in question.

Officially it would be classified as a copper pattern.

Since the official copper coins struck in Mass weren't authorized until Oct of 1786. They changed the design to an Indian design.

I for one, hope the coin to be authentic. It would give credence to those of us that believe these coppers exist.

Yes, I see the Pine Tree Copper on page 38.
That really is a great find!
I sure hope it can be authenticated.
Even if a pattern, that is truly a noteworthy piece.

Hey National Dealer was that copper penny the real deal. I followed the story line and I was wondering how it ended.

Self promoting on this forum? GASP! How could you?!? Anyone caught self promoting should be forced to come to my shop at 12 E. Darlington Ave. in Kissimmee FL and wash the windows. :p

I have not heard back from the owner of this coin. I forwarded the owner a few names of some dealers who specialize in this area. From the photos that I received, the coin appeared close enough to warrant further examination.

tradernick I am shocked and dismayed that you would mentioned that your wonderful shop is located at 12 E. Darlington Ave. in Kissimmee Fl, which is a short drive from Disney. How dare you mention 12 E. Darlington Ave in Kissimmee without mentioning the exit sign.

Okay now, you guys are getting a little close now to the self promoting.
