Hi folks, Had an idea of a set composite and decided to mock it up. The idea is relatively simple: one Kennedy half of each composition, in each available strike. Does the table below look complete, or are there additional coins you'd suggest adding? I've excluded varieties intentionally. Thanks, Dima
Right out of the gate, realized that 1965-1970 should be broken into -- 1965-1967 SMS 1968-1970 MS/PR And could add - 2014 High relief SMS
How do you classify the 1998-S special strike? Some people call it "matte proof", but it's apparently not an actual proof strike.
It's got the face value struck right there on the reverse. If it's not a "real half dollar", then neither are any of the 90% or .999 silver ones struck since 1964. Edit: On the other hand, the 5-ounce ATB pucks are struck with "QUARTER DOLLAR" on the reverse, and I hope nobody considers them part of a Washington Quarter set...
Am I? I'm not happy saying the gold Kennedy is in, but the pucks are out, just on the basis of size. Pondering questions like this was one reason I spent eleven years in grad school...
The beautiful 1998 50C used to be considered MS with SMS designation by PCGS; however, somewhat recently, they've changed it SP, still with SMS designation. The Red Book calls the coin a matte proof and lists the mintage and price as such. Either way, this coin is certainly special in the series and is captured in the table; I've split it between Matte Proof and SMS to satisfy both schools of thought. I consider the 2014 gold part of this set for three reasons: 1) it technically has a face value of 50C; 2) it is the same size as the rest of the series; and, 3) it's listed in the Red Book as part of the Kennedy 50C series and not gold bullion or a commemorative. Hypothetically, if the US Mint were to release 5 oz silver Kennedy halves, I would not consider them part of this set. My thinking: when it doubt, refer to the Red Book. It classifies existing 5 oz Washington quarters as silver bullion and not part of the quarter series The 50th Anniversary Silver set is exceptionally cool and is captured in the top row -- 90% silver; Unc, Enh Unc, Proof, and Rev Proof. Updated table: What other suggestions for additions/revisions to the composite do yall have?
And one more bonus nugget which I've excluded from the set -- 1964 SMS. According to CoinFacts, these halves are not supposed to exist. https://www.pcgs.com/coinfacts/coin/1964-50c-sms/6844
Here's latest -- Ordering isn't perfect, but that can get addressed later. More interested in capturing all the types. Was the "satin finish" used on anything other than uncirculated clad halves? (ie. silver satin..?)
Great; in that case, all the more confident this chart captures all the halves I'm looking for. Comes out to a neat 21 coin type set.
