:thumb:I finally did it, registered to post here. I've been reading here for months and impressed with the knowledge here, and I really enjoy the different views posted on each subject. It actually makes one think. I've been collecting since 2000. Like a lot of people I started with the state quarters and have since "branched out". I sure the wife thinks it is really true I do this for the kids. I have a set of Peace Dollars, Eisenhower Dollars, Roosevelt Dimes through 2007, American Silver Eagles, War Nickels. Working on Indian Head Cents (working on for three years, but I will get there) and Buffalo Nickels. I would like to have a set of Oregon Trail half dollars, and some day I will. So, hello to all!!!!!!!!!

I hope so also. However, my views on some things differ greatly from some collectors here. First, I read a lot of bashing of SGS and ANACS graded coins. I have made some of my best buys from these grading services. Looking at the coin and not the slab I saved money on some great coins. I cracked the slabs and put the coins imy albums or a display case I make for a few "mini-sets" I call them such as War Nickels and Westward Journey nickels. Second I restore silver coins. You can send a coin to NGC and pay them to restore it, they place in a slab, and now it is done with no mention of the restoration on the slab. I think they do an excellent job, but I wonder about something. If you had them restore a coin, after you get the coin have someone else send it in to be graded, would it be graded as a coin that has been cleaned? All the Peace Dollars in my collection are in my opinion beautiful. They all have beautiful cartwheels yet when I bought them they looked bad. It seemed I was the only person that would purchase them, I saved a lot of money. It didn't happen over night, took about a year. Coin collecting does take a lot of patience when you are on a budget. I also agree with the thught that almost all old coins have been tampered with at some time or anther in an attempt to enhance the appearance. I look forward to hearing others views on this. I am prepared and my feelings won't be hurt. I respect your feelings on this, I just don't think only the rich should be able to own rare and beautiful at the same time,

I don't know about people bashing ANACS. I think they do pretty well. And they are usually considered one of the "top 4"
SGS on the other hand shouldn't even be allowed to grade coins. They'll slap and MS-70 on just about anything. But if your buying the coin and not the slab, which it sounds like you are, thats fine. Just don't ever trust an SGS grade without knowing how to grade the series of coin yourself.

I made an error already. I didn't mean SGS, I meant PCI. I think they have been bought out by David Lawrence and had a name change also. But anyway, I got some great finds on PCI coins. I also think ANACS grades buffalo nickels more conservative than NGC or PCGS. Every ANACS buffalo nickel I've purchased gave me a victorious feeling. Again, it takes a lot of patience, but they are out there to be found.

Some of the PCI slabs are on the money with the grade and some are not, but that can be said of the top 4 so the old PCI graded coins are usually a good buy since they don't usually fetch what they should and even SGS slabbed coins are sorth something so if you can get a SGS slabbed coin cheap, why not? Just bust that little boogher out of its slab and stick it in your collection. :thumb:

As to "perfect" coins in my collection, that won't happen. They are way too expensive and I can enjoy one of my corroded pennies just as well as a MS one and I save a ton of money. ;) I'm not as picky as some, so you and I are pretty much rowing the same direction on that one. :eek:hya:

I hope to see you posting some of your interesting cartwheel dollars, that will be an interesting thread! :D

Welcome to the forum and I feel ANACS especially tends to grade tough at times. PCI had it's moments as well.

    Welcome welcome welcome.

Regarding (preserving) silver & nickel. I've been told to ALWAYS neutralize the coin after preserving it. If an acid is used to remove some unwanted environmental damage, then soak the piece in baking soda & water for a really long time before rinsing & putting it in a holder.

I don't hesitate to buy a coin in a PCI, ANACS, NGC, or PCGS slab. The grade on any slab is just an opinion. (I'll admit that some other slabs turn me off a little).

Regarding PCI, there are some bargains out there and there are some interesting scenarios. Once I had two error coins in PCI holders which were graded 63 & 65. They were subsequently graded by NGC as 65 & 63. Yes, the grade opinions were different (switched) between PCI and NGC. Also, NGC added that the off-metal was also "double struck in collar" which sort-of changed the value of one coin.

    Welcome Welcome Welcome

    Very best regards,
    collect89
