i have a dilemma that i'm not sure how to deal with. to purchase high quality coins, i sometimes have to accept common date low grade coins as part of the deal. i am quickly amassing a stock of very common date world coins and have no idea what to do with them. i can't spend them and the numismatist in me prevents me from just tossing them in the trash. what do i do with the junk? i haven't found someone willing to take them. here's an example of the junk: 1930's - 1980's Canadian cents in VF or less 1980's Canadian 10 cents in F or less late 1990's Mexico 1 pesos in VF or less 1950's German 5 Pfenning in VF or less -Steve
i just realized i could probably put the Canadian cents in folders and give them as gifts to my sons. still no clue on the other stuff. -steve
Just some options: Here are a couple thoughts: 1.) Donate them to a local charity auction. Set the value at high book. Write the coins off on your taxes (something the local coin shop owner suggests sometimes...he's also an accountant.) 2.) Give them to trick or treaters for Halloween (saw this on another CT thread.) 3.) Offer them up as a lot for trade on your local craigslist. (Maybe a fun idea would be to see what the best possible coin you could get in trade for your junk?) 4.) Put them in a church offering plate or Donate them to Jerry's kids or a similar charity (I'm sure they get plenty...) 5.) Offer them to a local Boy Scout troop or YN group...once again write them off. Just a few suggestions... ~benjamin
What's the big deal just keep them. The one thing about coins you put them away for awhile ,and then you want to look at them maybe in a couple of months it's enjoyable that;s if your a series collector. To make it easy on yourself , you could also burry them somewhere, and maybe some young coin collector comes along with his metal detector and he may get a thrill out of them.:goofer: Jazzcoins Joe:whistle:
In addition to the fine ideas already mentioned, one thing I've enjoyed doing is just to spend them. You might get some interesting reactions from the person at the cash register, or they'll just slip back into circulation to be found eventually (maybe even by a member of CoinTalk!). I've read enough threads here from people excited about finding something in circulation to want to encourage more of it. And, of course it only really works if you're dealing with coins that are legal where you live.
how many 1920 Canadian cent in G do i need? in my min 1 is too many - i already have the coin in BU and AU. these are dupes in very low grades that are worthless to me as collectibles - i have pawned a ton off to my 7 year old son, but even he is starting to decline stuff... "daddy, i already have 6 of those fanny things" to me, a serious collector is someone who looks for quality over quantity - why own 7 Fine coins when you can own 1 BU? -Steve
isn't that thing full of perverts and social misfits i don't think the bulk of this stuff is still in circulation - i know the german stuff isn't. i think i'll donate it towards coin collecting merit badge. -Steve
Purchase a 6pack of Bud Light a Coin World magazine and head over to your local airport Foreign exchange office and dump 'em in their lap and say, "I'll B right over there. Let me know when you've converted them to US currency!" :kewl:
I like the above suggestion best. My first experience collecting coins was pulling canadian cents out of my parent's pocket change. For some reason, there seemed to be a lot of them around back then, but not as many now.
would it not be illegal to use foreign coins to pay a debt held in the US. Canadian cents are not legal tender in the US so i have no idea how tore-distribute them in change. -Steve
They don't take them around here either. Sometimes they will slip in with the change...but that's it. I know when I worked at the bank are machine filtered them out and they usually ended up in the garbage.
My suggestion is to have a YN giveaway. Either here on this forum or on one of the many other coin forums. One other coin forum has a giveaway section and another has a contest forum. On the PCGS web site there are always YN giveaways. Some years ago I had 25 giveaways of excess coins on that web site. You could have a contest right here or just a giveaway. Many of these coin forums have a section on foreign coins and you could have a giveaway there. You may want to check with your local grade school to see if they would like to have them for educational topics on coins for the kids. Or just send them all to me and let me worry about them. :rolling:
