Looking at us, the majority of us have only been members since 2007 or 2008 (some 2006). There are very few 2004 and earlier still on here. Where do the old members go, and why would they leave, never signing back on from time to time ever again? stainless
People go through phases with their collections just as they go through phases with their online habits. With the economy being in the toilet, I wouldn't be surprised to see some of the more recent members getting discouraged and not visiting as much. It's tough to sustain an interest in collecting if you just got laid off. Then again, the activity on a forum like this does seem to snowball, with more momentum it's more likely that more members will stick with it. Interesting times ahead no doubt.
I think some coin collectors just lose interest in the field. The old members may find other forums ,and not come back here. I personaly think that coin talk is a great forum in comparixon to some others there's more activity here and more members and nice people. I don't know if hostlity can drive them a way but it;s very possible. I;m a new member here ,and I enjoy this forum it becomes a family after awhile,I will be here for the duration. I'd be interested in knowing how many members have less than 25 posts, then, to compare that to the number of members we have. I think that will tell an interesting story, like the many peeps that come here to ask about a coin they have no knowledge of and once they find out it's a fake or not worth much, they never come back. They came, they asked, they moved on. They aren't collectors, just someone with an unknown coin. Can you sometime run the numbers for us Peter and post them? I surmise it will be a very high percentage. Ribbit
I'm sure there are many reasons some members dont come back or dont come here as often as they once did. It could be that money is tight and they dont have the extra to spend, our personal lives change which may effect how much time we have to spend on our collections and on the internet. Maybe some of them have lost interest all together for whatever reasons.
Do you believe in the Roswell crash site do you think the govement has aliens at area 54 Jazzcoins Joe:whistle:
It seems to me the active members posting does change. Plus you get a lot of one time posters that do not come back.
Fro instance while I still come in every day & read I dont post very much any more. There was a point where I was posting every day or even multiple times a day . Thats just not the case with me anymore.I just feel like I dont have anything to really say. Not that there isnt anything to talk about but- I am either too busy with the job , family or really not interested in the type of threads that have been on for the past few months. Dont get me wrong there have been some great ones . And there has been alot of clutter too.
Also, sometimes things come up and you're unable to post. For example, I haven't really been here this much this month except this past week. A lot of stuff's been going on. but also, as Peter said, sometimes collecting goes in phases. There was a point where I wasn't here for almost a year or so (because I was younger and couldn't really afford coins so I didn't pay much attention to the hobby)
Interesting topic. I always notice when someone posts who joined before '05 besides Peteer and some of the mods. As already stated people go through different phases. Like budgood, I don't post as much as I did when I first joined. I am still a regular poster though. And some days I don't make a post, but I always check to see whats being talked about. I think there are alot of the older members who check in alot but only post when they see something that really interests them alot.
My experience... While I am a new member here, I have been a member, then moderator, then Advisor of ScubaBoard (another expensive hobby!) for over 5 years. There is a natural 'life cycle' to most users. While Scuba is probably more transient than collecting, often people dive for 2-3 years and then move to something else more consistent with their life status, I still see similar patterns in many the other social communities I am involved in. Lurker-- a consumer of information; non-contributor. Many ppl fall in this area and never evolve to the next step. Noob -- still a net consumer of information, but now feels confident enough to answer a few questions or at a minimum asks questions that stimulate other discussions. Its all new and exciting. Mainstream -- consumes some information, but often contributes much more than what they consume. Depending on the person's experience in the subject matter coming into the community, some users may move to this stage quite quickly. Veteran -- consumes little, is getting tired of seeing the same questions/topics/issues over and over and is selective about where they respond. At this point, depending on the Veteran's personality and interest level, he/she either leaves the board (or no longer posts at all, just reads) or they move into a 'sage like' position jumping in on topics that are ONLY interesting to them. This is an off-the-top-of-my-head analysis. Scubaboard has over 100,000 users (~40K are active) with over 3MM posts. The owner is a very approachable person and if the powers at be here (Peter, et. al.) are interested in what we do to keep people interested in the board, PM me. Craig edit: Wow I realized I first registered back in 2005, but had only returned a few months ago when my interest in collecting was rekindled. I have been collecting for over 40 years (since I was 10) and worked part time at a Coin Shop in Huntington Beach during the 70s..
So what can I do to get you old-time members who don't post much anymore to have a look at the Unanswered Threads and see if you can answer any questions that got overlooked?
Hey...I am still around...2005 and quite a young member at that!! My level of collecting has increased $$$$$ wise as I have moved into high graded currency! My purchases are fewer, but oh what a fine example they are....LOL There are a bunch of older members here...just keep an open eye! RickieB
I'm not saying they still aren't here. But if you read most of the post, they are usually by the later members much more than they are by the earlier members stainless
I'm on about every day, but since I haven't been buying as much lately I waste.... I mean spend most of my time in the General disscusion area. I do check around the other sections, but don't always have much to add. I do miss some of the posters that used to be regulars, but on the other hand we have a lot of great new members active now.
