Guess The Grade, Of Sorts...#1

Just thought I'd post this, might post a few of these today, here's a "sort of" guess the grade. The coin I'm going to post isn't graded by anyone, so it really is left up to you. I'll post my opinion on it later. Here is the coin:

I will say MS65 RB, I know "middle of the road". The pics are to reflective and angled to get any more accurate then this.

I do like this coin though. Very Nice!!!

AU RB. The obverse may just be poorly struck, but it doesn't look as nice as the reverse.

Nice, clean, well struck coin, but what happened on his beard? If that is as bad as it looks, it may not even get graded.

Mint State 63 Brown? It’s more of a guess than an opinion of the grade.

If you'll pardon me for saying so, Phoenix, it's a little hard to make out some of the finer details, based on these pics, but he does look a little "smooth shaved" around the beard. So I'm going to switch gears from what I think it will grade to what I'd hold out for if this were mine. $25. I just agree with Allen; I like it that much. :high5:

The beard details are typically missing for Lincolns minted from the late twenties on. Most years you would not even know he had a beard. As for the "weak strike", this coin has more detail than my certified MS67. With what appears to be NO chatter on the shoulder, it is a very well struck coin. I just do not know what to make of that hole in his beard.

My guess is just choice BU, provide it is original. Pic are difficult, but I suspect some unnatural color to the coin.

When the TPG's grade these, they do not like marks on the reverse lettering and the obverse shoulder. Thats why gems are so tough

 

That's just the dimple variety.

I meant to say $25 and up. The lighting makes it hard to zero-in.

Having the coin in hand...

Here's what I tell from the coin in hand:

It's a beautiful example, has a nice autumn appearance to it, IMHO. The color seems natural, no problems, the luster is a little on the dull side, but still decent. The mark on the beard that rlm noticed, for some reason is just very visible in pics, (probably from the angle I shot it at those times, it captured it just right), but in hand it is not noticable really, unless you know it's there. I had to actually look for it, lol. But it is a nice coin. I can get more pictures if you guys would like, to be honest, the color is more intense in the pics, than the coin in hand at the moment (but I am looking at it under natural light.)

Excluding the mark, I believe that coin would have a shot at 67 RB. However, the mark is there. Actually, it is very similar to my 29-D both in overall quality and where the mark is save you mark is larger. I have been told my 29-D would go 64/3 (Doug) and 65/4 by most others, so I will guess yours is a 64 RB.

 

I'd say MS-64 R/B is about right on, MS-65 R/B a good possibility. In hand, the luster isn't there unfortunatly for it to go a MS-67, (even if the mark wasn't there) but it is still a nice coin IMHO. BTW, can a coin that is R/B go MS-67? I thought that for it to be a 67 it had to be a Red coin?

Of the MS67 Lincolns Heritage has sold, here is the break out:
BN (7) RB (40) RD (8,404)

 

OK, it has more luster than I first thought. And that nice, warm toning (even when I lighten the saturation in my photo-suite), I'm going to say, is a grade-lifter. MS-65 all day long. TPG-66 with that toning. If RLM is right, it's strike-distinguishable (which I'm still having trouble making out...but then, I haven't been able to find one of these on Heritage to compare), it only goes higher. Now watch, after I said all that, you have it graded XF.

 

MS-64 R/B. Nice coin!

 

My first impressions were :

1. pretty coin
2. why no beard detail ?
3. chatter on ON of ONE on reverse

I'm assuming the missing beard detail is due to worn dies or poor strike. Judging by the luster, it looks like a mint state coin. I'm thinking MS63RB.

If that missing beard detail is rub, I think it would go AU55, maybe 58.

 

I would say 64rb - nice coin by the way. As noted the marks on the reverse lettering is what attracked my attention and for my grade. Still a nice coin.
