I am trying to fill in my Whitman coin album of wheat cents. I have everything 1940 and up, (except for the 70' s sm. date) and I was wondering where I could find a good deal where I can get all of the ones I need in the teens through thirties. I'm looking for the more common dates, meaning less than $20 per coin, and I used my 2019 blue book to add up all the prices. My final price was about $60. Do you know where I can buy specific dates? And even better - in a specified condition? I looked on ebay and put all the dates I need in my cart, but it adds up to about $180. So I don't want to use ebay.
There are key and semi key dates in that range. They are costly. For the other dates try buying Wheat Ear rolls for earlier dates. Some dealers sell rolls by the decade.
Ok, thanks for the input! Speaking of which, I want to try and get one of these rolls by this seller. I really hope I can win! I've been saving to buy something like this. A true old coin roll rolled up a while ago by a family of collectors in tenessee. They sold them to this guy, and now he's selling them on ebay. And they are apparently very good buys according to the reveiws. But $30-40 is a lot for a 14 yr old! https://www.ebay.com/itm/Very-Nice-...4217bc8cad:g:nKoAAOSwEmNereAh&redirect=mobile
I've fallen for the "unsearched roll" thing on ebay, many of us do. You can go ahead, I've done it a couple of times, but you're spending more than half your budget on a total unknown. Usually, you'll get all 40s and 50s common dates, plus the enders. For the seller, it's a windfall. For the buyer, it's a lesson.
Roll hunting from banks is free, and I've found rarer coins doing that than I've ever got from a roll on ebay. You might try that. You've got time, you're only 14
Used to do the almost every day until the Corona virus. And also, I've looked at all of the data in ebay and this seller is pretty credible. All the prices started a bit low when these rolls were first being sold, but went higher and higher as people started to realize just how good these rolls are. The prices have went up to nearly $100, and all the reviews have good things to say about it. So, if I can get it for about $30, I'm going to get it.
I saw that with a guy who had some amazingly toned mint sets. I was able to get one at the beginning, but when people got wind of it, prices went nuts. Whatever you do, good luck and enjoy it. Hope you get a good price.
Lol, just finished raking leaves the other day for our whole yard and got $100. It took a long time though.
No. I was putting a price of 31-34 per roll and every time I did that, someone bid like 35 or 40. I got really close though, on one. It was at $31 and I put 31.50 at the last few seconds, but it said I couldn't do that and had to bid at least a dollar higher. But, there's still a few more, so I'll try and get those.
Are you using a sniping tool? Sometimes they help. I had my snipe set @ $71.11 on a bodacious looking 1865 IHC. All week long it sat there on ebay with only a few bids at less than $10. I just knew, I thought, that I was going to get this awesome coin cheap...well, no, another sniper had his set higher and won the auction for $73.61. Still a sniping tool does not alert other buyers to a good product MOST of the time.
If anyone knows someone who wants Whitman folders for British coins I have loads (for a small consideration). A US dealer did once contact me but I lost his details.
I'm sure it took some time. But you earned $100. That's great and it's tax free. Buy the coins you want or like and enjoy them for years. Building a collection takes times and money, but more importantly, it takes patience. Wait for what you want. Don't buy whatever's available just to get one.
have you given any thought, since you are on Ebay anyways, looking at a near complete set without the more expensive key dates included, Likely it's going to be under $50, but condition is usually on the low side in those sets. Anyways just a thought, Might be more productive to get you where you want to be than hunting through pre-searched rolls. (there's no such thing as unsearched, just not searched by the last guy that had them. They are searched exhaustively, if you ever do get lucky, it's usually a random find from circulation out of the blue, and not these wheat cent rolls people or companies sell.
In the sixties the best cents I ever got were from older women who paid me in cent rolls for doing their yard work. If you advertised that you would do yard work for $2 per hour if paid in old coins you might do really well with the older folks from their change jars. Most would pay you in silver coins first then drop down to pennies. good luck.
