Study the images below this should be fun as I do believe that perhasp no one has ever even checked for such a variety. So here's some links to what I believe to be mules? IDK...what you would call them. We all know that throughout history the dies have been reworked ,repurposed,to carry on use. So the year 1942 a proof Jefferson struck in the regular alloy of the type 1 nickel. Next type 2 proofs struck and of course you could not use the same Reverse die of a type 1 to strike a proof type 2 reverse. So there are type 1 proof obverse dies used to be paired with the new type 2 reverse. Now you have created a known ddo only found on an type 1 proof . On a type 2 reverse. @Rick Stachowski @dwhiz Post your 42 proof images here please.
The last shot is very special.....its a die gouge found on an type 1 proof ddr as a key pup, on that doubled die......however this isnt an 1942 type 1 proof it is a type 2 . Leading me to believe that the die marriage of the type 1 42 proof there was a divorse and the type 1 obv. Hooked up with an 42 type 2 reverse. The 1942 Pr wddr-003 type 1
So a member here today posted a new pick up an 1942 type 2 nickel. And it has the date pup of the ddo 001 type 1. So when he post his coin and if his date looks like this.... Then I do believe that's another link of a type 1 ddo 1942 Jefferson nickels can be found on type 2 Jefferson proofs.
Heck I'll send you my 4 so you can see in hand. But that die gouge is a dead give away pup on that variety the wddr003 and Dwhiz coin date matches the date on the 1942 ddo 001 type 1
Proof dies from type 1 1942 Jeffersons were used to strike type 2 proofs.....thus we have .....a remarriage or at least a juicy affair
Rick do you own a copy of the best of the Jefferson nickel doubled die varieties 2nd ed. Wexler & Ribar
The 4 obv. & rev full views were only to show the 4 total I own two of each type 1 and 2. When Dwhiz posed his coin I checked it....again a type 2 and a type 1 obv. as to the date id. On the 2 they match perfectly.
No . I using coneca chart http://varietyvista.com/04a JN DD Vol 1/Reverse Design Varieties.htm http://varietyvista.com/04a JN DD Vol 1/Obverse Design Varieties.htm and brains chart .. https://www2.briansvarietycoins.com/listings/cat/15
I do have quite a few (5-8?) of those WDDR-003 with the die gouge both raw and graded. For some reason about 10-15 years ago I was buying every example I could find.
