See this coin. It has spots It might not be the kind that Doug is concerned about, but I can't tell the difference and many Peace Dollars seem to suffer spotting.

Personally, I like the coin. I would grade it MS-64 if the dark spots in the pic are shadowes and not spots.

photo looks 63 w/ stains from previous dip

The photo looks 63 to me. I don't see any evidence of rub or breaks in the luster in the photo but you really need to see the coin & move it around under good lighting conditions. There appears to be some stains that may be from a previous dip that was not properly rinsed & neutralized. Can't tell if the stains are permanent or have damaged the surfaces beyond market acceptability. If the price is right, then grab it. However, rather than hoping that there are no problems with the coin, it might be better to buy one that is certified. To be honest, in my own collection, I always enjoy looking at the Peace Dollars that I bought certified by NGC and PCGS. I always seem to find problems with the ones I bought raw & sight unseen.
    Very best regards,

If there is no corrosion on this coin its a 64.

    I like it!

Even if dipped the luster is still there , I like the coin . MS-64 by these pictures , hope it's even nicer in hand . Also like the strike .

I think you're right , the spot on the neck looks like the spot on a MS Franklin I tried to remove after it formed in a safety deposit box after not looking at it for ten years :(, on my coin it was surface damage that no amount of cleaning will remove .

The luster of the coin is still there and appears to be white with some light golden tone starting, unless the lighting is off. Might have been dipped, but most white coins have been doesn't bother me. The strike looks good, but a 35 P should have a good strike. I give it a MS-64. Too many small scuffs and hits in the secondary focal point and large field infront of Lady Liberty on the obverse to go 65. Nice pick up if the price was good.

I would say it has been dipped. But it is still VERY beautiful. Peace dollars are my favorite us dollar coin ever made. :D

I have a walking liberty coin that is dipped ,and this coin without a doubt is dipped the appearance of the fields, and the fake looking luster to me give it away.

Very nice coin in my opinion, probably an Easy 63. You should be quite happy. This coin should grade with any TPG.

How do you make fake luster , luster forms when the coin is struck and the metal flows to fill the dies , short of restriking I have never heard of making luster , or fake luster . This coin has original luster . IMO:D

Couldn't an acid dip dissolve a little metal causing it to make a new looking luster?

no - the first photo I thought it wasn't cleaned. The second one it looks to me as if it has had a run of the mill dipping. I think it is better than a 64 because I see almost not gashes on it.

Looking at the new photos, I'd be concerned about PVC on the obverse between the 1 in the date to below IN GOD WE. There seems to be some haze here (perhaps the flip or phto?).

Otherwise, the coin looks like a 63 or 64.

I stand by my prior statements, and strongly suggest you purchase a slabbed example as to limit your downside risk.

    Respectfully...Mike

Even in slabbs coins can turn.

No the luster is formed when the metal is pushed to fill the forms of the die , acid dipps will only remove luster , if you dip a coin to long or too many times it will lose all of its luster .
