Elongated coins? I don't think you mean my penny that was stretched and then stamped "HOUSE OF BLUES" last time I was in New Orleans.
re: elongated coin pics If you would like some elongated coin pics I would suggest this site - http://www.liss.olm.net/ec/ And if you would like to know where you can get elongated coins made in your area - try here - http://www.wcmassey.com/lep/hhg/states.htm
This is for serious collector. Now that Coney Island is closed I think some of mine might be worth a few bucks in the end. Ruben
Several years ago when I was in Vegas, I stopped in the M&M store and made a few of their elongated cents. When I got home i listed them on ebay for $1.50 and free shipping. Total accounting - $1.50 less $.50 and $.01 each to make, less $.35 listing fee, less $.39 postage to mail equals $.25 profit each. Did it just for fun. When I was a kid we used to put IHCs on the streetcar tracks. Made a lot of elongated cents that way; just for fun.
http://pennycollector.com/ is the largest by far. also try: http://www.tecnews.org/index.php They have both been helpful to me. Not that I am a big collector of these things but I have somehow picked up a thousand or so over the years.
The caveat here is that it was when I was a kid. That was at a time long before clad coins, when IHCs, Mercs, Walkers, V-Nicks, Buffalos and an occasional Barber were not considered to be unusual. I handled all of those types while collecting on my paper route. One of my customers showed me how to find the horny cowboy on a Walking Liberty quarter.
Believe it or not, I know a 10 year old girl who goes to my daughter's daycare that has a collection that contains about 210 elongated cents! Not bad for a 10 year old!
I recently started collecting elongated coins from wherever I happen to go where they are available. I haven't purchased any from others. It makes a great numismatic souvinere and is less expensive than almost anything else you can buy. The important thing to remember is to keep a few copper cents in your pocket when you go places.
The secret is using the COPPER pre-1982 cents. Zinc cents sometimes scrape off the copper and give you a streaked end result.
There are web sites for ECs (elongated coins). Here's one http://www.pennycollector.com/index.html just Google elongated penny.
