Yep - it almost wants to make you the coin grade higher. Obvious weak strike and STILL has such nice eye appeal to me. Great coin.
Its got considerable hair detail, and it was very weakly struck. I would grade the coin f-12 and perhaps better.
Was hoping Scrooge would weigh in and call it a skudzy PO-1, but c'est la vie. ANACS graded the coin "VG 8 Details, Corroded". Although I can't dispute the coins does have some pitting, I think ANACS was a bit hard on the coin, and it should have been put in a silently net graded 6 or 8 holder. The coin's color and eye appeal are what instantly drew me to the coin. For those of you who have been paying attention to my posts over the years, that's generally how I buy coins, and this was no exception. The fact that the coin was in a "problem" holder, with a "problem" price didn't hurt either. I purchased the coin from Shawn Yancey who stated in his description that the coin wasn't corroded. While I'll stop short of that assessment -- there is clearly some minor pitting present on both sides -- to me it is more than made up for by the coin's eye appeal. It just has wonderful color and a great deal of obverse detail for a "VG 8" coin, much less one net graded lower. To me the lesson to be learned here is just because a coin is in a "problem" holder, doesn't mean the coin can't be desireable or attractive. Had this coin been in a problem-free PCGS holder it would have been priced at twice what I paid for the coin, and quite frankly, I prefer this coin over most of the VG PCGS coins I've seen over the years (including my last liberty cap, which ended up in a PCGS VF 30 holder and cost me five times what this coin did) and it wouldn't surprise me in the least if this made it into NGC or PCGS problem-free slab one day. REMEMBER -- BUY THE COIN NOT THE HOLDER. Anyway, thanks to all for their guesses and comments (and please feel free to keep them coming!), and I hope you enjoyed the thread....Mike
p.s. Mark/Toad get the bonus points -- S-21 is correct. Instantly recognizable by the tapering pole in the lower right field. Well done guys!
I neglected to post just to ruin your day Mike Using ANA standards the coin would grade AG3. It amazes me how the TPG's can grade these any higher when half of the legends are not even visible. But I know they do. As you say - c'est la vie.
Ooops - the problem was that the night before I talked to toad on the phone for about 3 hours. And then had to go into work early - Mark does not function well on 3 to 4 hours sleep. So maybe spock just needs more rest - instead of being on the board all night long.
Sure! Blame it on me! I think everyone knows the truth. Ribbit Ps: I have one word for you . . . . COFFEE!
No coffee for me....a dew man myself, but caffine does not bother me. As to the coin - I still do not think I would net it out. Just too nice.
But when was it holdered? After Jan 2006 they stopped net grading coins. Just detail grade and list the problems.
I would guess probably VF-20 but have found I am generally a bit on the low side. so will guess VF-25.
