To which mottos do you refer? There are none that are unique to the 1934 Washington quarter. The mottos - " Liberty"; "United States of America"; 'In God We Trust" and "E pluribus Unum" can all be found in more detail through a Google search.
I should have been more explicit. I mean how to distinguish between the "heavy", "light" and "medium" motto varieties.
There are pictures on page 170 of (my) 62nd edition of Yeoman's 2009 Coin Guide, in the quarter section.
Thanks all for the references. It was the Heritage pictures that caused me to create this thread. I must have the visual equivalent of a "tin ear". I can see the differences, but have lots of trouble applying them to a coin in hand. In particular, I have 5 raw 1934 Washingtons of lower grade (VG - F) that are driving me crazy. I had hoped someone had put together some text with specifics to look for along with illustrative pictures.
OK. Here is one that is giving me trouble. (Pardon the photo, I am just learning a new camera and how to shoot coins) (And also learning how to add the photo to the post) What are opinions about the motto classification?
I'm not an expert, but based on the amount of wear (and cleaning) on those last two...the motto still stands out really well. So, it looks like a heavy motto on both to me.
And three more that I could not load into the previous message: Album 1934: Album 1934D No.3 I have a dealers classification of a couple of these which I will post after everyone has a chance to make their own evaluation.
Hi gc1111. The image davidh posted above is a great example of the light motto. I feel all of the images you have posted are either the medium or the heavy motto. The key to telling the difference between medium and heavy is the top center point of the W in WE. On the medium the center point is low of the rest of the letter. On the heavy the point is higher than the rest of the letter. Hope this is of some help.
This is exactly what I was looking for I think a big part of my problem is that the wear on lower grade coins blurs the differences between the medium and heavy mottos. Add to that the fact that I do not have a light motto coin to put "in hand" and I felt totally at sea. Now I am more confident that I can distinguish between them. Now for the answers. Three of these coins have been graded by a reputable dealer/grader. They are the first one I posted: 1) 1934 Med motto F18. 2) 1934-D Med Motto G/AG 3) Labeled No. 3, but the last one that I posted: 1934-D Hvy Motto G/AG The others came from sources I no longer remember, however my evaluation now is that they are all medium mottos. Thanks to everyone, but especially thanks to Larry (ldhair).
