My local guy (dealer) is quite a bit cheaper than your local guy but you never know what will be in stock at any given time. None the less, when it comes to many coins I would rather wait and support my local dealer if at all possible and, of course, I do love the hunt!
Sure there is: for the enjoyment of the collection itself. Maybe you mean investment benefit. After I completed my 20th Century type set (easy) I completed a 1986-2005 Silver Eagle set (very easy). It is an exceptionally handsome set, easy or not. Beautiful design, superb condition, and I'm in close enough to the ground floor to be able to purchase them at a very reasonable cost. It might be a long time before the set triples in price, but I don't care; I bought the set to enjoy while I own it.
Nice to have you here! I think if you take a look at the prices that Littleton sells coins at, and then you also look at the coin market...and I don't mean a quick look, but study it you would have to agree that in most cases Littleton is on the high side. Now that is not wrong--each store can market their item for whatever they want, and not matter the price you will always have buyers, and some that will not buy. But in todays market normally the lower price wins, unless the other company has done so much marketing and branding that people go for it anyway and I think that is what Littleton has done. I'm not bashing Littleton--I've bought from Littleton and would again, but not without studing the market and getting on heck of a deal! Speedy
I know of a dealer who sells the Littleton albums and folders for less than what Littleton sells them.
However, Littleton is fun to cherrypick. I live close enough that I've been there a few times. Never made it the main reason for my visit. If we're vacationing in NH or ME, we may drive through town and stop. You have to enter the store at the company headquarters and specify exactly what you want... series, date, mint, condition. They check inventory and send a request downstairs. MANY minutes later someone shows up with a tray of coins and paperwork. The coins are signed into the store. I check them out, and repeat. It takes a while, but I've gotten some nice Morgan VAMs from them. I hope they don't read this thread. They'll be on to me.
JWilley - welcome to Coin Talk. I find it unusual that your first post is about a 3 year old thread about your employer. If you are not a collector and only a marketeer, I hope you learn more about this hobby. This knowledge will help you in understanding collector opinions and why they say what they do.
