US Mint Proof Sets

I have every proof set from 1954 (flat and box), working on original as issued back to 1936. I buy them for a value far beyond monetary.

Nice. Once you get past the mid-50's they are a challenge.

 

I have a date run from 1942 to date, but they have really fallen out of favor. My fingers itch to go forward from 1936 (I have that set.), but my brain tells me not to do it. I really like Proof coins, but few collectors seem to care them these days.

 

I buy a uncirculated and proof set every year... two of every year if I can, one to keep complete, one to break open for the Dansco Album's

 

I'd love to have a proof set from the year of mine and my wife's year of birth (both late 1930's) but unfortunately, I can't afford it.

 

You could go for just one coin, not the whole set.

 

Getting my first proof set, 1958, the year of my birth, was a great day for me, many, many, years ago.

 

You want to know my favorite part of proof sets?

Every few years they change the size and dimensions of the packaging. That way... it’s a real blast trying to keep them nice and organized.

 

I know about that! A while back I bought 2 blue boxes from the US Mint to keep my Silver proof sets in. After a certain number of years, they changed the size of the packaging so one of the boxes aren't filled up. I'm not home now to see what year sets fit in the box. Maybe it's when they started with the State Quarters. To satisfy my own curiosity I'll have to look when I get home.

 

I hope whoever designed 80,81,82 was fired and beaten with a cane. I keep the envelope years and silver sets separately. As someone with borderline OCD... seeing this causes me great angst lol

I found these boxes at JP's Corner (not affiliated, just a customer).

They accommodate proof sets pretty well. Yeah, the '82 slides around.

 

I looked on their website and $5.95 isn't bad at all.

 

I buy the UNC mint set, and clad and silver proof sets every year. I went through a buying phase a few years ago when I would get them at local auctions for quite cheap prices. They don't really appreciate but I got them so cheap that they don't really drop in price either. I took a bath on the 1999 silver proof set when I bought it for $300 and it is now worth $65. In all, I have 369 sets if you also count the silver premier, silver prestige, special mint, Ike, and presidential dollar sets. I have at least one clad set since 1955, silver set since 1992, and mint set since 1968.

I remember the Prestige Sets 1983-1997.

I was so excited when the modern commemoratives were introduced I bought two 1986 Prestige Sets with the Statue of Liberty Coins for $48.50 each (only Prestige Sets I ever got). Thirty-four years later, I see they're listing on eBay for about $25

 

What do you guys put your modern uncirculated sets in? I bought a box that was supposed to hold them but I have to lay them down. Seems like they could come up with other packaging.

I collect 'em without a 'hang' or a 'hoot' about value. I've been doing it since I was a kid, and my father collected them for me before I came of age.......

 

Same here My father and Gramp used to sit and drink Scotch while me and my brother flipped $50.00 worth of pennies reverse up then they'd come take all the Wheaties. We re roll up and back to bank. But We got Red Sox and Joe Castiglione on the radio no tv!! LOL But we did get Cheese it's and Canada Dry ginger ale! 1964-1970 Sometimes at 15 we'd have to drive Dad home. Mom wasn't happy!

 

Me too. It always cracks me up when non-collecting friends think my hobby is some kind of financial investment endeavor.
