U-571 movie from 2000. Americans capture the German U-Boat 571, and capturing the first Enigma code machine from the Germans in WWII. If I were from the United Kingdom (or perhaps ANYwhere), I would be very angry. The British Navy captured it from a U-Boat BEFORE the Americans entered the war. Sadly, as y'all stated above: many people will be fooled by Hollywood that their version of History (even in a "based on historical fact" movie), is virtually slanderous.
Many candidates for blessed father... not a cross in sight or any other christian symbols. But whatever, meaningless as far as the movie goes.
I think it has been well established that the movie is not factual or historically accurate (nor did it try to be). Ebert was not in the majority: The Broadcast Film Critics Association (BFCA), the largest film critics group in North America, has announced its winners for the sixth annual Critics' Choice Awards to be presented on Jan 22 in Los Angeles. Winners are: Best Actor: Russell Crowe Gladiator Best Actress: Julia Roberts Erin Brockovich Best Supporting Actor: Joaquin Phoenix Gladiator, Quills & The Yards Best Supporting Actress: Frances McDormand Almost Famous & Wonder Boys Best Director: Steven Soderbergh Traffic Best Original Screenplay: Cameron Crowe Almost Famous Best Screenplay Adaptation: (tied) Stephen Gaghan Traffic & Steve Kloves Wonder Boys Best Cinematography: John Mathieson Gladiator
Lares and Penates, the household gods... http://www.mythencyclopedia.com/Iz-Le/Lares-and-Penates.html
I did not find the movie very entertaining. I found the characters cartoonish and the acting boorish. I never believed Crowe as the protagonist. As a former reenactment buff I found the costume choices ludicrous and the setting unconvincing. It is the same reaction I have to movies set at the time of King Arthur showing him in full armour LOL. Arthur if a historical figure at all would have lived near the end of the fifth century many centuries before the invention of full armour. One of my favourites was the director's cut of the original German version of Das Boot. I also loved Cross of Iron by Peckinpah.
I didn't show the end to my students, just the beginning battle scene and one of the gladiatorial contests in the Flavian amphitheater.
I did not realize that you only wanted to hear from people that agreed with you. I will know better next time.
It's a thread about the 20th anniversary of a movie... obviously you hated every aspect of it.. so one wonders why you would post instead of scrolling past? If someone posts a coin that you have no interest in or don't like do you post a list of every reason you hate the coin? Of course not..
I poked around the web and couldn't find the release date of GII. It seems like the project was greenlighted in 2018. Apparently Crowe will make a cameo as an inspiration to Lucius (Lucilla and Verus' son) - since he's dead it would have to be in a dream-like state or vision reminiscent of Obi-wan Kenobi. Lucius seemingly is destined to be the main character. Not sure if the real Lucius (born Lucius Verus, like his father) ever did much in actuality. One source I found says that he died young. So if he indeed is a key character it would have to be stretching the truth. If anyone knows anything about the release date please advise.
Yes, it did, but this was a 10/10 moment. There is nowhere but downhill from there Rest of the movie was a 8/10 for entertainment, and a 0/10 for historical accuracy.
Its in my top ten best movies of all time. The Germans learned from their mistakes, adopted Roman discipline/ training/ weapons/ strategy.....sacked Rome in 410AD. Would be great to have a remake of Cannae, where the RR armies are obliterated/ duplicated only in 1914 when the Russian armies where annilhilated at Tannenburg/ East Prussia.
There are so many moments in history that deserve great cinematic treatments. Unfortunately production is incredibly expensive - the first, perhaps best, part of the Gladiator film (forest battle) took over a month to film on its own. At the end of the day the film must make money - so must appeal to the masses. I also love Braveheart.. another historically inaccurate film - but extremely entertaining. Especially when the Irish are pushed forward by the English .. and just decide to join the Scots mid-charge!.. always belly laugh time! Love it! I would watch that moment on a loop! Good on ya bhoys!
You got it @Bing .... my Mom and Dad are from Dublin (moved to Canada in 1963)... Dad loved this film..
Lawrence of Arabia... after a battle with the Turks... Lawrence: “No Prisoners!” Peter O’Toole’s face was classic...
