Can you all give me your opinion on whether or not this coin would be gradable or would it be considered Details Damaged due to, among other possible things, part of the top of the 5 on the reverse seeming to be missing?

The 5 is just fine. It is supposed to look like that. The reason(s) that it probably wouldn't straight grade are the cleaning and/or rim dings

Oops, thanks. I realize I was comparing to a 1936, which seems to have a more full 5. And, yes, I thought rim dings as well might be an issue. What makes you say it is cleaned?

The lack of any handling build-up for one. It's too clean.

Robert, sorry for the newbie question. But, can you explain a little more on what you mean by "handling build-up"?

Throughout the circulation process, oils from fingers, lint dirt from pockets, dirty hands and a myriad of other contaminants are deposited on the coins and begin to accumulate in the low areas of the coin such as the shield of your coin. Only the high areas of the coin are subjected to abrasion leaving the low areas untouched. There are many old(er) coins that have not been subjected to this abuse. You need only Google an old date to see what I mean. Try researching your coin.
    I hope this helps.

The top of the 5 is how it was made.

It won't grade because the reverse was harshly polished leaving all those hairlines you see.

I've seen coins like yours "body bagged" because the black toning on the obverse could be hiding problems.
By "body bagged" I mean not even put in a DETAILS slab.
I had a Morgan that was treated that way.

That’s some serious ED on the obverse...

    Environmental damage.

I think the rim dings would keep this one from grading, along with a ghastly cleaning attempt on the reverse.

Um, what? I don’t see anything of the sort. It’s much more likely that the hairlines are from friction with an album slide or something of the sort.

The obverse is close to environmental damage, but I think it would straight grade.

Acetone will get rid of all that without hurting the coin. The fact it isn’t there does not mean it has been improperly cleaned.

You and I must be interpreting the photos very differently, then.

Let's hope, for the OPs sake, that I'm wrong!
