    Hi new to collecting.
How can you tell if a coin is missing clad?
    Is this just weathered

In 1964, dimes were not clad. They were silver. I think that is just gunk on it.

This coin would have been much more exciting if it DID have a clad layer. On the bright side, it is silver so it is worth a lot more than a dime.

You can tell by the weight, as the missing layer will cause the coin to weigh less.
And you can tell by the color. Look at this quarter with a missing clad. The copper will be bright and well struck.

1964 Dimes were silver and not clad. It's just dirty. Welcome to CT.

Yes this is a good point, I missed the 1964 part thank you.
Clad layer sandwich coins started after 1964.

Here is a genuine 1964 cent on a clad dime transitional planchet. Cost $4,000

I read this years ago. Let me see if I can explain it correctly. In 1965 the US Mint was still striking coins for 1964. So when the Clad Planchet was introduced in 1965 one of them (with the help of a mint employee) ended up being struck with a 1964 Die. Hence the coin you have shown.

Or it could have been left in a bin accidentally and then mixed in with new clad planchets

What would of been left in a bin?
    That's a clad planchet.
