Hi new to collecting. How can you tell if a coin is missing clad? Is this just weathered Obverse Reverse
This coin would have been much more exciting if it DID have a clad layer. On the bright side, it is silver so it is worth a lot more than a dime.
You can tell by the weight, as the missing layer will cause the coin to weigh less. And you can tell by the color. Look at this quarter with a missing clad. The copper will be bright and well struck.
Yes this is a good point, I missed the 1964 part thank you. Clad layer sandwich coins started after 1964.
I read this years ago. Let me see if I can explain it correctly. In 1965 the US Mint was still striking coins for 1964. So when the Clad Planchet was introduced in 1965 one of them (with the help of a mint employee) ended up being struck with a 1964 Die. Hence the coin you have shown.
