I have a mint tube of Silver Eagles. There are black streaks on the tube and in the reeded edges of the coins as if someone put a squirt of powered graphite between the tube and the coins. Can anyone help diagnose the problem and offer a remedy? Thanks.

Not sure but could it be a reaction between the coins and the plastic container? I don't know what kind of plastic the mint uses for these tubes but that could be the source of this type of toning (for lack of a better word). I myself have several tubes of silver eagles but have never experienced what you are describing. I do, however, have a container that is specially made to hold silver dollars/eagles that is similar in nature to a pvc pipe and have seen the type of condition that you describe. Perhaps you should remove the ASE's from the mint container and store the coins in airtight containers.

What is the year of the tube? I have several rolls of Peace dollars in tubes and that has happened to a couple of them. The thin strip appears down the center of each side. I thought it was a reaction to the plastic tube.

The coins are 1997 and your description sounds like what I am seeing. Have you tried to remove it from the coins?

No I haven't done anything with them and I'm not sure that I'm going to. I only noticed it because I was moving them to another part of the house.

I debated removing them but I figured I would do more damage to the coins but trying to get them out of the tube than just leaving them alone. I'm not looking to sell or anything so I'll just leave them alone for a while.
