Spock1k, Could you share a few words of knowledge on how or why newbies/want-to-bes to collecting mohurs, of the design/type pictured below (and no I don't own it but it is a nice coin) , can come to better appreciate these type gold coins? Thanks in advance for sharing some of your wisdom
here are my 2 cents for the coinabove ( i own it) its a late islamic period coin as described by the 2 different scripts on the coin. Mohurs are mainly of 4 types Islamic and Moghul Period ( Mughal mohurs are supposed to be the king of the coins of their time) Pre islamic /ancient again some very beautful coins Princely state mohurs - like the one above ( whether struck for the emperor or not) British Mohurs - including the one's struck by the East India company. IMO the 2 mohur coin is the holy grail of the British Empire. If you are just starting out i would start with the British period and move backwards. The prices for the british period are hitting hte roof and will only go higher as peole become aware. LMK if there are any other questions
Thanks Spock1k. I do have a question. ... Are all the markings on the coin script (writing) or are some of the marks just decorative?
It's unfortunate that Indian coinage has moved away from this type of decorative design, I mean even the British rule coins had some flair to them... Has anyone seen the new Indian designs lately? I can't recall the denomination at the moment, but one of the current circulating coins has a cartoon hand giving the "thumbs up" on one side... what the heck is up with that?? lol
The new definitive series of Indian coins are themed around 'Nritya Mudran' which mean 'Dance Pose'. The "thumps up" and the other hand gesture that you might see in all the denominations are infact Indian dance hand gesture. Hope this helps.
Kid, I can appreciated the cultural significance of the hand gestures and I in no way meant to belittle their significance... However when the new design of a cartoonish hand on a empty field is compared to the beautiful designs in India's past, they come up severely lacking in my eyes.
the only thing i see is the trident that actually says the ruler is hindu and the devnagri script has the symbol J in that script
you care to show me one good design duing the last 50 years? i think the decline started with george 6 personally but whatever was left died in the 60's
i think thats showing a thumb tot he general population must be a 2008 coin ridiculous earlier the hand gesture was at least a dance form
Scott, India's definitive coins had always been issued in bland designs with the exception of 1994-2004 series 2 Rupees coin design. The Lion Capital, wheat heads and map of India designs had soured the eyes so much that its refreshing to see something else being portrayed in the definitives. I do agree with you that the designs are a bit distasteful from collector's point of view but the general population are very satisfied with the current series. I don't see anything cartoony with the designs but its just my two cents.
Yup, Republic of India coins suck big time compared with British Indian coins. Maybe things gonna change from 28th of October.
