Eh that's supposed to be US Mint --- Don't suppose anyone can correct the header?

That's a beautiful coin. I wish you could re-name the thread "US Mint" instead of just "US"...

I'm glad that they put effort into their platinum sets, they're the most beautiful issues the US Mint has today. But is there honestly any reason they can't do the same for cents and nickels? Honestly...

That is only the odor from Brooklyn.

Not the rest of the country.

He corrected himself in his second post, Treashunt... honest mistake.

    okay, missed the edit.

    Thanks for correcting me.

Phew, that was really a tough title to pass on.

As far as the Mint goes: That is why I don't buy ANYTHING from them!

No quality control, designs are mediocre, engravers are just fair.

Do engravers even come into it anymore? If I recall (and I may be wrong), everything is digitally designed now and laser engraved. I'd be surprised if there's anyone at the mint who can do intaglio engraving - even if they're still hand engraving, they'd be doing it on hubs, which don't require intaglio.

But I definitely agree about the designs. Its sad, because there's most certainly designers out there who want the same things you and I want, but have their hands tied by the government.

Doesn't Intalgio engraving involve only line printing?

Intaglio is essentially an incuse engraving. In numismatics, its generally a negative, mirror image of what is intended to come out onto the coin.

Are you talking about the condition of this coin or complaining about the design?

I bought the halves in a PF70 and MS70 NGC slabs. No complaints here. The reverse of that coin is one of the best I've ever seen. I have considered using it for my avatar. Also bought the PF70 $1 and $5 pieces. Great set.

Yup, poor choice of words in the header. Obviously it didn't come out the way it was intended. The coin issue is absolutely debatable.

Not to mention they sell these for 10.95. It's not likely that they're going to get quite the same level of care as a 1 oz. platinum proof.

It's no wonder it's hard to get a decent presidential dollar.

Were you being sarcastic or serious? Sometimes hard to tell on a forum with some people.

That eaglet design is horrendous. The birds look like a Ray Harryhausen stop action effect.

The only decent designs from the mint lately are the copies from the past. The St. Gaudens, Walking Liberty, The Buffalo etc.
