Meow was just pawing at quarters CRH and came across this interesting piece. It is a 2008p Hawaii State Quarter that at first seems like has a PMD gash on its Washington' neck. But Meow thinks at the very least it is a jagged grease mark. Maybe a lamination? As it seems to have no displaced metal around it. It also seems to have a doubling of Washington's hair behind his ear. What do you guys see? It is a fairly shiny coin so it is a bit difficult to photograph.
This is from some kind of die damage where the die somehow got a big qouge in it or all scratched up in this area. I have a lot of them that looks like your's but I'm not sure which state they are from. Every coin the die struck after it received this damage will be just like this one.
Well, Meow is not sure what it is exactly. But it is a gouge, not a lump. It just could be PMD, but it is so clean of a gouge. And it is surrounded by elements of a greased die. But Meow is certain there is that doubled die element in it. As the devices behind the ear is raised. Certainly a bit difficult to say for sure what is going on with it. Meow will of course keep it in the Cat hoard. Would anyone else have an opinion to what we are seeing here? Or would you agree with Meow's assessment of it? It is one of the more interesting items Meow has found CRH.
Meow will hope to come across sister to this one, but it is doubtful. As it is quite difficult to find many P mint coins in rolls where Meow lives. 90%+ of coins are D mints in local prey.
Oh, and Meow remembers the most notable "error" Meow found CRH. It was a P mint Wyoming State quarter out of a complete BU roll Meow bought on fleabay. Meow unrolled it hoping for minor double die errors on the horsy, but found a VERY scratched up obverse on one. Meow thought what the heck is this doing in here? This was supposed to be a original roll. Meow would have bet a lot on this being nothing but a PMD quarter, and thought nothing good of it. But to Meow's surprise, There where two more totally identical scratched of quarters in the roll. So it blew this Cats mind that those quarters where made with all those scrtaches. Meow would not have NEVER be believed if not for it being triplets.
When looking thru new rolls of coins from the mint almost always if you find a error or variety coin there will be others in the roll just like it. I have hundreds of coins that were made by the same die. Actually I have a lot of different groups of them like say the detached leg bisons , the extra tree Minnesota quarters and DDR Oregon quarters and etc. I used to do a lot of roll searching but have given it up as of lately.

I got it wrong in my first reply to you . I thought this was a raised area , I didn't know it was incused . You are right about it being struck thru grease. Sometimes this will stick on a die and make a lot of similar coins before it wears or falls off the die.
You guys dont like the doubled die part? It is fairly distinct. This quarter was an ender of a roll, and Meow could spot the doubled die so decided to open up that roll.
I don't see anything that looks like a doubled die. I looked again and can see what you are talking about behind the ear. I don't know for sure what caused these raised up areas unless it is from a die clash. This would have been on the higher area of the die so it may be a die clash . I have a big group of quarters here somewhere that have about the same looking struck thru area as your coin . They may be the 1908 quarters , I'm just not sure . I may try to dig them out of hiding in a few days and check them out.
