Sorry for the newbie question, but I notice that a 1976-S Silver Kennedy PF69 DCAM PCGS is worth $25. However, the PF69 UltraCam is worth $75. I know there are differences in how the two TPGs judge Deep or Ultra, but this is basically the same coin. What am I missing?
I'll let a vet have the final word, BrokrK, but NGC uses Ultra Cameo and PCGS uses Deep Cameo. There may be minute differences in how they assign the grade but essentially they're the same thing.
thanks, that’s what I thought which is why I can’t understand the difference in their quoted values per each TPG
PCGS has a great deal more influence in the modern coin market than NGC. Some of that is justified; some of it isn’t. You can find coins just as nice in NCG holders, but you can never resell them for as much.
Ok I’ll ask it another way. Why would PCGS and NGC value basically the same coin so differently? I fee there is something I’m missing here. But, what I see is that PCGS values theirs at $25, while NGC value’s theirs at $75. In that case, we should buy a bunch of PCGS ones for $20 each, as I’ve seen them offered for, crack them out, have NGC grade them and then sell them for $65-$70 each.
The grading service price guides are marketing oriented. The truth is determined by what people pay. Years ago PCGS grading was more conservative on modern coins. I don’t know what it is now. As for the registries, PCGS is the more prestigious. Since it only accepts PCGS coins, that adds to the value of the coins they have graded.
You mean prices quoted for the same grade ? I don't think you should see a 200% difference in price, and one where PCGS is commanding LESS. Do you have a specific example where you see the "same" graded coin costing less for PCGS than NGC ?
Sorry, guys. What I’m saying is that when I look up the 1976 S Silver Kennedy PF69 DCAM on the PCGS site I see a price of actually $22, when I look up the 1976 S Silver Kennedy PF69 Ultra Cam on the NGC site I see a price of $75. Seems crazy to me
RECAP: OP is stating that the price guides for PCGS and NGC show different values for the PR/PF 69 DCAM/UCAM 1976-S Silver Kennedy Half Dollar. OP stated NGC shows $75, while PCGS shows $25 (though I just checked on their website, and it actually says $18). To add a third (more accurate, in my opinion) price guide into this, Numismedia says it is also around $20. My theory for why this large discrepancy exists is simple: NGC hasn't updated that specific coin, for that specific grade, in a while. These coins are not selling for, and will not sell for anytime in the near future, $75. Ordinarily, what the previous members have said is correct, PCGS values will be higher than NGC's, and not without good reason, for PCGS plastic sells better than NGC plastic. This particular example is a straw of hay in a needle stack.
Thanks, tmoney. What brought it to my attention was I saw on eBay both of the coins with the NGC having a buy now price of $54 and the PCGS price was $21.
Just some lofty dreams is all. I suppose if you keep an auction up long enough for a higher price, someone is bound to swoop in, having only looked at NGC's price guide, thinking they are in for a deal. So perhaps that amends my previous statement of them not selling for that much, in theory it could happen. Here are recently realized prices: NGC PF69UCAM - $13.99 PCGS PR69DCAM - $16.00 When in doubt, eBay's Sold Listings are your best friend.
(1) NEVER go by asked prices. I can offer you that same coin for $200....then say you can have it for $100....would you say you got a great deal, that I cut the price 50% ? (2) Check MULTIPLE sources when in doubt. Obviously, less at stake with a $50 coin than a $2,000 coin. But check Ebay (completed sales).....Heritage....and Great Collections. (3) When you check auction/past sold items....unless they are very recent, check CURRENT listings and and see where coins have ACTIVE BIDDING. You want to see multiple items going for sale in a NARROW RANGE.....don't buy a high price outlier....remember, sometimes 2 bidders can drive the price up and that wouldn't necessarily be "the market."
FWIW, I saw a few 1976-S 69 PCGSs that have 5 days until completion and the current bids are at $2.00. It won't finish there, but I'd watch those auctions if not bid.
