At least from my standpoint, we should really acknowledge the great job the mint has done with State Quarters and National Parks Quarters, especially. I had no idea about some of these national parks. Seems it was a pretty effective way to teach the public.

I agree. I have learned a lot about different national parks. I'm still mad about the re-naming of McKinley to Denali, though. I feel like that was an interesting move, to say the least.

Yes, that is indeed part of the experience of collection coins, whatever, whenever and from wherever they may be.

In my opinion, the National Parks Quarters are underrated, and I do find myself looking into where some of these places are. Many of the State Quarters gave us uninspired clip-art designs, but the ATB quarters have been mostly far better. The 5 ounce pucks may have played a part in this. Clip art and state outlines would look silly in that format.

I use non-US coins to help learn foreign languages. One of the best French lessons I ever had was picking up the French version of a catalog of standard Canadian coins. Same goes for Japanese coins, though I'm not as far along with that challenging language. Arabic coins are next. I took two years of Arabic in college and I'm trying to hang onto it. Coins are a great way to combine interests. So yes, I'm definitely learning from coins.

I hated school as a youngster. But I absolutely devour history. And it’s all because of my coins. I can study a coin and it very much is studying history for me.

If we did a survey, I think we’d find a strong interest in history among most collectors. History makes coins more than a lump of metal.

I learn many things from coins, and they have inspired me to learn much more about British and ancient Roman history. I read that coins are overrated in that respect. I would say that they are underrated.

The state quarters were designed by the general public and had no consistant theme. The ATB quarters are done by professional artists and the continuing theme on each is the representation of a national park. It's not suprising they are better.

And the coins give you a physical link to that History and make it "more real". not just an abstract event of dates.
