1798 Large Cent Grade/Value

Another one for yall. It is an 1893 Large cent. With moderate corrosion on the obverse. The reverse isnt too bad however it appears someone wasnt too careful in trying to put it in a flip. lol It looks like Staple holes theat have been left behind.

I would say G-4 , but I 'm not to good with old coppers , nice piece of history .

PCGS has this coin at G4 150. Is that right? I was thinking AG on the grade and I was pushing that. Maybe I should stick to wheats..

1798 Large Cent, 2nd hair style, Very Good details Damaged-corroded-cleaned net FR-2 value? It would probably sell on Ebay for $40 - $60

 

Although the coin is porous, corroded and worn, the Letters and Date are legible, the details (Miss Liberty and the Wreath) are pretty much intact. Also, even though the rims are worn and corroded, they can be distinguished from the Obverse and Reverse fields. IMHO, that spells at least a G-04 grade and even if the TPG gave it a hit on the rims, there is no way that it would grade less than a AG-03!

It's a 1798 S-187 2nd Hairstyle (R-1 rarity) and there's a rim cud at 2K to 3K on the obverse and a die crack through the fraction on the reverse. As to grade, obverse is VG-8 details and the reverse is VF-12 details but it's corroded, scratched, and as you pointed out, it's been the victim of a vampire attack so I'd give it a Net AG-3 or G-4 but a compassionate TPG might go as high as G-6. As to value, on Ebay it would bring between 60 to 100 bucks and if I was bidding, I'd bid around 70 bucks and the book would probably be around $100 to $125.

I like it! :thumb: But I'm a firm believer that beat up copper needs a home too and I have some DBC's in my collection that look worse than this one does.

The only way the PCGS price guide is usable is if the coin is slabbed by PCGS and considering it would cost you around $150 to slab this with PCGS, that negates the value of the coin so use other price guides that are based closer to raw coin values.

Maybe I'm being too hard on this coin by net grading it all the way down to a FR-2. But "60 to 100 bucks"? I don't know about that. The corrosion on the obverse is quite detracting (especially because it obscures the date). The cleaned surface only adds to the distraction. These coins, which IMO have at least as much eye appeal as the coin in question, all sold on ebay recently for less than your estimate.

The key factor is not one of those grades over VG-8 (obverse or reverse), without taking into consideration damage, so they are not worth as much. However, one of them happens to be a good one:

That's a S-159 but the two hits really hurt it but I would have paid what the winning bidder got for it. :thumb: The OP coin doesn't have severe damage like the S-159 and nice rims, so it's worth more. But on Ebay, prices are fickle and it matters when they ended as to price because if it doesn't end at prime time, the bids are always lower.

It's a FR-2 or 3 without the cut and with it, It's a PO-2. Compare the wear on it to the OP coin.

Compare it to the OP coin and notice what ANACS graded it and if you are concerned that Bob is lying, think again. He doesn't dew that!

Yeah, I agree with the "Fine details", but my question would be, what, if anything, did ANACS net grade it at?

 

Many times they don't numerically grade it if they give a details grade. I think that sucks but it probably costs more so I can understand not doin it on a lower grade coin, since it will reduce profit if sold.

I'll look for an example that gives a numerical grade and will post it when I find it.

I'll search completed listings tomorrow to see if I can find a DBC in line with the OP coin, that has a net grade to it.

I would net it Ag-3 and as far as I know 1798 AG-3 coins go for between 30-60 bucks.

 

Red Book says:

AG3 - $40
G4 - $95
VG8 - $135

What I find interesting is there is a difference between TPG grades and EAC grades, so which grading standard does the Red Book relate to?

Neither - I think they try to base it off the ANA standards. I think EAC is a little tougher on the coins, but that is okay. I was hoping my new coins from Tom would be in today, but alas will have to wait until next week.

 

I was also hoping my coins would be in from Heritage but I still haven't received shipping confirmation yet so I guess they haven't shipped yet. Heritage is extremely slow on shipping stuff out.

I've picked up some interesting coppers lately so when they arrive, I'll post them. Plus, I finally went to a local coin club meeting Thursday and met up with the only other colonial collector in Arkansas so now I have someone to talk with locally. He's also got a book out that many don't know about and I'm going to hold a Contest and give the book away as the prize, once I can finally get everything organized (my life) and have the time to deal with the contest too.
