No eBay protection?

Several weeks ago I bought a coin from a seller on eBay and paid immediately with PayPal. Fully three hours after I paid for the coin, eBay sent me a message saying it looked like I hadn’t yet paid, and advising me not to, as they were canceling the sale because it looked like it wasn’t legit.

Not only did eBay cancel the sale . . . they deleted the listing. They removed all evidence that it ever existed. I can’t even bring up any detail from the listing. No photos, no seller name, no price, no sales date . . . Not even an eBay item number!

If my payment had failed, I could understand them stepping in and canceling a suspect listing to protect the buyer. They gave no reason as to why the listing looked illegitimate, so I did some research, and found the same seller had already listed the same coin earlier the same day . . . twice.

Unfortunately, checking my PayPal transaction page revealed the guy has my money so, for the past several weeks I have been tirelessly trying to reach both the seller and eBay Customer Service.

The seller won’t respond to my messages (using the email address in the PayPal transaction page), so I’m not going to get satisfaction on that end.

eBay has apparently furloughed their CS department during the COVID-19 crisis, as no one is there to take calls. Their automatic receptionist just tells callers to use their boiler plate FAQ system to resolve issues. What sort of on-line business would leave their customers hanging high and dry with no phone or email support of any kind, let alone an industry behemoth like eBay?

I don’t want to push PayPal to resolve this issue since they didn’t cause it. eBay should own this issue, but I can’t even make them aware that it exists. Incredibly frustrating!

eBay: too big to give a rat's behind about silly things like customer service
(that's what kind of business they are)

Sure, I can be fair and say "Yes, it's a global pandemic and I want employees making pennies to be safe from the illness." But I can also say this - if you can't handle your business in a reasonable and professional way, maybe it's time for your business to take a break until you can do so.

Personally, it looks like eBay has done anything and everything they can to eliminate the listing. PayPal handled your money, IMO PayPal should help you get it back. Not saying my experiences with PayPal (primarily as a seller) have been much better than my experiences with eBay (again, primarily as a seller) but I would think if you wanted your money back, you'd go to the institution that handled the transaction.

I know . . . It just really rankles me that eBay LIED . . . Saying it looked like I hadn’t yet paid the seller 3 HOURS AFTER PAYMENT. I have this in an email from eBay, so it can’t be retracted or walked back by them. I could sooner get relief from PayPal, but I’d rather live without the money for as long as it takes for eBay to walk the talk and make good on the situation.

Can you find anything in your eBay dashboard under purchases? If so, you can file a SNAD from there and get the eBay wheels working. Also from the eBay FAQ area you should be able to file an Item not received case.
Barring that.....I would contact Paypal. You may also be able to dispute the transaction from the credit card attached to your paypal account. (if there is one. )

So, if you remember I posted a thread about eBay screwing me over on a return. I submitted a complaint to a few places (BBB, IL and CA AG office) and eBay continued to lie even there - saying that I didn't cancel my store until March 23 (even though an early termination fee was placed on my account on March 6 - which shows on my eBay invoice - after I actually told them to close it.) Basic stuff that can be easily disproven (Why, exactly, would an early termination fee be applied to my account if I hadn't asked them to close my eBay Store?) Yet they continue to lie about it. To the California Attorney General.

Personally, I would get less bent out of shape about the email you received from eBay (chances are it's from some algorithm and not a human being) and I'd call/message PayPal and get your money back.

And then never give eBay a cent of your business again, because companies that act like this don't deserve to continue to do business. (But that's just me, haha.)

Thanks . . . I didn't think I'd be able to find the deleted item under purchases, but I did, and I filed a complaint against the seller, looking for a refund. Will let you know how I made out.

File a case with Paypal, they are owned by Ebay, and be patient, you will receive your money back when this gets sorted out, I promise...!

I had great results with a email to get money back for medical masks that were never delivered. I mean in a 1/2 hour after I emailed customer service. There is a terrible illness going on right now, relax

Good news . . . eBay refunded my money overnight!

Thanks to @Beardigger for suggesting I look under Purchases in my dashboard. I couldn't find it back when the listing was first deleted, so I didn't expect to find it last night.

Thanks to everyone else for the encouraging words.

I would have to agree 100%. It's as if you were charged for something on your credit card that you didn't purchase. You need to dispute the charge with PayPal.

After multiple nightmares with eBay, I can sum it up for you.

Fraud is rampant on eBay as well as all other internet sites...

Do not panic. eBay wants your business.

You have 30 days to place a claim for an eBay resolution.

You have 6 months for a PayPal resolution.

If you paid by credit card, the time limit is determined by your credit card. I have gone the credit card route after 9 months.

It is irritating to wait the time limits but better than a loss. For high dollar items, use PayPal and pay them with a credit card.

ebay is behind on replies because of the panpanic. They have people off work.

By the way, you can use PrtScr on your keyboard to take a quick picture of anything of interest. Save it vice print. I learned to do this on every eBay listing I bid on. It serves as a record of the pictures which are part of the description.

There’s no point in calling them out, there are too many crooks over there. I love eBay, but you better watch out...
