In another thread some time ago it was mentioned that I should have looked out back of the CC mint for old dies. Well there was real truth to that suggestion. Thought I would share this little bit of CC/US Mint trivia with everyone. :)

Last month I was in the Nevada State Museum where the Carson City Mint is located. It was a Sunday and very few visitors. I went into the mint and found a stairway that goes way underground where under very low light, I walked through the various parts and rooms in the silver mine of the Comstock lode. It was amazing and a little creepy as there was no one else down there and the mine tunnels are quite narrow. There, in one display, was a pile of used dies, corroded into one basketball sized wad of metal. This tour finally lead back to ground level and you can reenter the Mint ad see the coin presses and plenty of coins that were minted in the Carson City Branch Mint.

If you like Silver and Gold you'd like this Mint. I highly recommend it. I remember a recent thread by another CTer and that encouraged me to make the Carson City Branch Mint a destination whenever I'm in the area.

I also went down into the mine but only for a moment because the girls were ready to go :( I'm glad you made the trip to see it and hope you were able to pick up a silver souvenir that was minted on the press. Last summer was my first time to Carson City and hopefully I will be able to go back at some point in the not too distant future. If I had known about the buried dies and had more time I would have walked around the place just to fantasize a little about what might be under my feet :)

I went to that museum too back in 2006. I didn't realize that there was a mine exhibit downstairs. I guess that's a good reason to go back :)

After I was finished in the museum, I went across the street to the little coin store there. Didn't buy anything, but there was lots to look at.
