This chunk of metal directly above America is confusing me. I'm not sure what it is. Could it be a weird looking die chip? Granted this coin is in horrendous condition, Just wondering what the anomaly is. Thanks for any advice!
Yes you did but then we all make mistakes. That coin is in bad shape as you said bit the piece you are talking about looks like it was added after it left the Mint. From what you see is that a possibility?
Unless it was welded on there somehow. The anomaly is really attached. I tried a few times to knock it free, Broke the toothpick.
I'm not to sure. I'm leaning towards added material. Like solder. I don't think an IDB can form in such a manner.
Notice how it is rounded at the base. I am a guitar player, so I deal with soldering a lot when I want to change wiring. I'm sorry. It looks like solder to me.
This looks like damage from something slicing a chunk of the metal and rolling it up as it went. Notice that part of the S in cents is missing and to the right of the S looks like the coin has heavy damage in this area.
I appreciate the thoughts! I think I'm going to toss it into some acetone for a day or two and see if I can get any better info.
