So I just picked up an 1917-D Type 1 Standing Liberty graded AU53 by PCGS. I have a couple questions here. First, of all the 1917s D/S, Type 1/2 ,which one's are the Key(s) and which are the semi's, if they are so?? I always get confused with the SLQ series when it comes to the keys. Also, I picked this up for $265. Is that too much- too little? About what area is the coin valued in?? It's a beautiful coin actually! I'm not even worried if I overpaid. Check it out and judge for yourselves. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=370094525481 I personally think it looks fantastic for AU53, and the seller gives top notch service just for those interested. (Don't know if I can promote sellers, but he's got some nice coins.)
I don't know about the price but that is my favorite American coin this week. Congrads. Enjoy it for that it is. Ruben
Steve, You paid MS62 money for that coin. Check out this ANACS graded coin from a Heritage auction last October. It sold for $260. http://coins.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=447&Lot_No=8104 I can't speak to the quality of the coin because I don't really collect circulated SLQ's, but my feeling is that you could have gotten a really nice MS63 for just another $50-$100. With respect to key dates, none of the 1917's are keys or semi-keys. They are all reasonably priced until you reach gem state at which they start to take off. The SLQ series has two ridiculously tough keys: the 1916 & 1918/7-S. The semi keys to the series are the 1927-S, 1923-S, and the 1921. There are also some conditional rarities in the mint state range but that information escapes me at the moment. My advice is to return that coin. They have a no questions asked return policy and plunk the $260 down on this coin if you really want one of these right now. http://coins.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=1117&Lot_No=7637 I know it is an ICG coin and it is overgraded, but it is nicer than the PCGS coin that you have now. Just a thought.
Well, I judged by all other $200-$275 *range on ebay for that 1917-d type 1 and figured it was worth it. I don't think I'll return it, for many reasons. One, this is a coin I've wanted for a long time, and not that I feel foolish for not looking into it more, but I've noticed these SLQs are appreciating fast, so who knows how much I'd have to pay in a year or two. I know that doesn't make much sense since I could shop around and possibly get a better one for a better price. But in this case, I'm buying the coin, not the grade and I look forward to recieving this (it's currently on layaway) I always appreicate the advice, but you see where I'm coming from Lehigh? **(http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150258123280&ssPageName=MERCOSI_VI_ROSI_PR4_PCN_BIX&refitem=370094525481&itemcount=4&refwidgetloc=closed_view_item&refwidgettype=osi_widget&_trksid=p284.m185&_trkparms=algo%3DSI%26its%3DI%26itu%3DUCI%26otn%3D4%26ps%3D42) ONE example* *http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...5&_trkparms=algo=SI&its=I&itu=UCI&otn=4&ps=42 another* *http://cgi.ebay.com/1917-D-T-1-STAN...0207982QQcmdZViewItem?_trksid=p3286.m20.l1116* I don't know, just some examples..make of it what you want because it confuses my a**
It's right on the redbook value for the grade. Though the redbook is a bit high, the fact that it is PCGS encased adds some value. You paid about what the coin is worth IMO. Personally, I think most BIN prices for coins on ebay are waaay overpriced. I'd rather bid. John
What really matters, of course, is if you are happy with your purchase, Steve. Currently, Numismedia Retail is about 175$ in AU53. Granted that their values lag the market somewhat, but I don't subscribe to the Graysheet. Personally, I would have held out for an MS63-64 but that's because I just think these look great with a lot o' luster on them, while other series I collect I think look better worn (Barbers, Walkers). Go figure. It really comes down to personal taste and budget, imo.
Well, there in lies the problem I guess. I've seen most MS63/64 FH or NOT in the $400++ range and that's a little bit out of range. And as you mentioned, it's all about my budget and opinion of the coin that matters. And as I've mentioned. This one really caught my eye right away. I've been looking for a good 1917-D Type 1 for some time now, so I'm content with what I've paid; no regrets here. And I just want to point out however, I didn't just see this and automatically go with it without looking for others. I found a good handful of candidates, but in the end this one was the one I wanted.
Oh yes, and I meant to say last night, thanks for clearing up my misconceptions on the key dates. For some reason I always thought the 1917-D/S Type 1/2 were key/semi keys. Oh well, I learn something new everyday, thanks. BTW, I looked at that HA link for the ANACS MS62. This seems like a good example of when a lower grade coin looks better than a higher graded one. If the choice was given, I'd take that AU53 just because I don't find the toning on the 62 that attractive. Different strokes for different folks is all it is.
That coin looks nice to me. Can't help on prices since I do not collect these. Have used that seller before without problems. Still a nice coin and as long as you are happy that is good enough.
Like Lehigh, I think you can do better with some patience. That said, I do like the coin posted originally to this thread....Mike
I think you guys are getting some impression that I hopped on eBay, typed in "1917-D Type 1" and went at it. I've been searching for and following sales of this coin for a while. And infact, I was about to settle with a 1917 type 1, no D and I passed, figuring the one I'd really enjoy would come along, and it has. So I'm not quite sure why it is I'm being called impatient. What I'm suppose to do when I find what I'm looking for. Say, "well, I found what I wanted, but I'm being too impatient, let me pass this up until the planets allign and I find one so unbelievably perfect it's unheard of"?
You did fine Steve. What matters most is that you're happy with the coin from a collectors standpoint. Don't let they're comments get to you. John
Personally I would have passed on the coin. It appears to have granular surfaces and great impairment of luster based on the photos. However, with collecting how much you paid isnt nearly as important as how much enjoyment you get out of it IMO.
Steve, my comments were not meant to criticize your patience or judgment. I like the coin you purchased. I just don't like that you paid full retail price for it. In your OP, you gave the impression that you didn't really know what the values of these coins were. Additionally, the prices of the AU50-MS63 1917 SLQ's are so closely grouped together that I think there is more value in trying to get an MS62 or 63 at wholesale than paying retail for an AU coin. Heritage auctions allow you to get these coins at or about Numismedia Wholesale most of the time. Regardless, it makes very little difference what I think. If you like that coin, then you should have no regrets about your decision to buy it. FWIW, I don't like that Heritage SLQ either, I was just trying to give you an idea of what is available in the marketplace outside of E-Bay.
Oh no, I didn't take any offense or negative criticism of what you said. Infact, thank you LeHigh for pointing out for future reference the price differences in graded SLQ's (in particular the keys/semis/ 1917 varities). And while it's true I didn't have a better idea of the prices for these coins,I did look throughout eBay and HA and noted examples in my prior post about some of what I saw priced at. And also, this is just one of many SLQ's I'm looking for. I'd like to have all the 1917s. 1917 type 1 and 2, 1917-D type 1 and 2, and 1917-S types 1 and 2. So that's just a good start IMO to a 6 coin mini-type set. If the prices of these don't appreciate that quickly I'll be looking for more in AU to Mint state with FH even. I really like this series of coins and as mentioned, I like this coin and know it'll look even better in hand. Maybe when I get it I'll update ya'll and give my final judgement. Until then, thanks guys for the comments and advice.
