Was there ever a time where PCGS, NGC, ANACS, or ICG ever slabbed a counterfeit coin thinking it was real? stainless
I'm sure they have inadvertantly slabbed counterfeits, just like the world's greatest experts in all fields are fooled from time to time. They guarantee their work. I've personally never needed to to call them on it, so I don't know how effective that is.
I think they have been Anthony but I don't have any documentation. More knowledgeable members will be along shortly I am sure.
A couple of times I've heard of and maybe more , but it's very rare for the top three or four . rzage
I saw a 1866-s motto twenty with the motto tooled off in a 55 details cleaned holder (certified as no motto). That is the only one to date I have seen.
The Micro-O Silver Dollars were ca. 1930's era counterfeits that did make it into TPG holders and have a premium now if you can find them. Because they were a counterfeit made to circulate(during the time when silver got down to 33¢ an oz. no doubt) they are more collectable than a counterfeit made to deceive collectors. I would love to find one and purchase it, but the owners of these hold them dear.
Yes, all 4 TPG have slabbed counterfeits. They will also aggressively buy them back off the market if presented to them.
I've heard of certain slabs being called "the old Rattler Slab" so now I know what they meant! :mouth: Ribbit
